The Southwest Pennsylvania regional is held at PennWest California, formerly California University of Pennsylvania. As of the 2024-25 season, the Southwest region primarily serves Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Somerset, Washington, and Westmoreland counties.
History
The Southwest regional was first held in 1995, breaking off from the Northwest Pennsylvania Regional due to growing numbers. Though the regional started small, it gradually began to grow in strength and stature. In the early days of the regional, Somerset Junior High School, which had previously established itself in the Central region, dominated the B Division, whereas several teams competed for dominance in the C Division.
In the 21st century, the Southwest region has been dominated by Shady Side Academy in both divisions. Major exceptions to this were in the years from 2003-2006, where both Shady Side teams competed in the Northwest regional instead. However, they returned in 2007, along with Sewickley Academy, which competed in the first time in 2006. Another major exception occured in 2022, when the Shady Side Division C Team did not participate.
Recent History
In 2024, Shady Side's Division B team stopped competing, which opened the door for Winchester Thurston Middle School to claim their first regional championship. This ended a 14-year winning streak for Shady Side, the longest such winning streak in regional history.
Impact of COVID-19
In 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams from the Northwest Regional combined with the Southwest Regional to temporarily recreate the old West Regional. In Division B, teams from the Central Regional also competed in the West Regional. In 2022, the regional returned to being for southwestern teams only.
