The Northeast Pennsylvania regional is held at Penn State Wilkes-Barre. The Northeast region is home to the following counties: Bradford, Carbon, Columbia, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Monroe, Montour, Pike, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming.
History
The Northeast Regional was formed out of a split in the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional in 1991 (results from this time can be found on the Southeast Pennsylvania Regional page). Ever since the very first Northeast regional, the tournament has been held at Penn State Wilkes Barre, making it the longest-run tournament at a single site in the state.
Early Years
In the original years, teams from Stroudsburg dominated the region, especially in Division B, with Stroudsburg Junior High School winning 16 of the first 17 regional tournaments and boasting 12 appearances at the national tournament when representing the northeast region, including four state championships. The only year during this time in which Stroudsburg was defeated was 1997, where Wyoming Area Middle School managed to dethrone them in one of the top upsets in regional history. However, Stroudsburg would edge ahead of Wyoming Area at the state tournament by only seven points to earn qualification to the national tournament. This 3rd-place finish by Wyoming Area would be the best any non-Stroudsburg team would finish at the Division B state tournament for the first 28 years of the regional.
Stroudsburg High School was not as dominant as their junior high counterparts, but were very successful in their own right, winning 12 of the first 14 regional tournaments. Their top rival during this time was Wyoming Area High School, who won the regional title in 1995, 1997, and 2005, and also placed higher than Stroudsburg at the 1996 state tournament. Although the northeast region did not have any qualifiers for the C Division national tournament after 1992, both programs regularly placed inside the top 10, including multiple 4th-place finishes by both teams.
In 1999, teams from the Lehigh Valley joined teams from the Reading area, who had been competing in the Southeast region, to form the Central East Regional. Though the number of teams in the region saw a slight decrease in the aftermath of the split, numbers soon recovered and in fact continued to grow. In the early 2000s, the region frequently boasted over 60 total teams.
Recent Years
In the mid-2000s, both Stroudsburg schools gave way for new contenders in the region. After Wyoming Area's 2005 regional title, which broke an eight-year winning streak by Stroudsburg, Athens Area High School began an eight-year run of their own, which peaked with a 3rd-place finish at the 2011 Pennsylvania State Tournament. This finish remains the best any northeastern high school other than Stroudsburg has performed at the state level. North Pocono High School and Abington Heights High School exchanged regional wins following Athens' fall after 2013, but Athens experienced a resurgence at the start of the 2020s and has begun a new winning streak.
In Division B, several schools fought for the regional supremacy previously held by Stroudsburg (including one final Stroudsburg championship in 2012). Eventually, Harlan Rowe Middle School emerged in Division B after competing for many years in relative anonymity, becoming the first team from the region in either division for 13 years to qualify for the national tournament. As they are the feeder school for Athens, their rise is a significant factor in Athens' return to prominence.
Event Clarifications
In 2009 and 2010, only 22 events were held, as Technical Problem Solving was only a practice event in 2010 and not held at all in 2009, and Pentathlon was not held at all either year. Also, only the top 3 teams received medals in each event rather than the usual 4 in 2010. In 2011, medals were once again given to the top 4 in every event.
In 2011, Shock Value was cancelled because the supervisor was unable to attend. All Division C events were held.
Impact of COVID-19
In 2020, due to a low number of B Division teams in the Central East region, most of those teams were expected to compete in the Northeast region. This included the five-time defending state champions Springhouse Middle School. However, this tournament was eventually cancelled due to the 2019-20 Coronavirus outbreak.
In 2021, due to ongoing recovery from COVID-19, teams from Division B competed in the temporary East Regional with teams from Central East and Southeast regionals. The Division C iteration was held virtually, with participation from some teams from the Central East Pennsylvania Regional, which was not held.
In 2022, the Northeast B Division was held once again. Due to continued low numbers in the Central East B Division, several schools from that regional continued to compete in the Northeast region, including Springhouse Middle School in 2022 (the only time a school from outside the region's borders has won). By 2024, the Central East region held a B Division tournament once again, and the Northeast region returned to its traditional team base.
