The Southeast Urban Tournament of Pennsylvania (also known as the Philadelphia Urban Invitational Tournament) is contested solely by teams participating in the Urban Schools Initiative of Pennsylvania Science Olympiad. In 2025, 11 B teams from 9 schools and 16 C teams from 11 schools competed.
History
The Southeast Urban region began in 2014 as a means to get urban schools within the city of Philadelphia more involved with Science Olympiad. The first ever regional was held on April 5th, 2014, at the String Theory Charter School of Philadelphia Performing Arts, between five high schools and three middle schools. Since then, the program has steadily grown in size and scope. The 2016 regional was held on March 5th at St. Joseph's University.
In 2020, with the split of the Southeast region creating a Southeast North region held at St. Joseph's University, the Urban tournament's status was shifted to being an invitational tournament open to teams participating in the Urban Schools Initiative of Pennsylvania Science Olympiad.
In 2021, the Southeast Urban Invitational was held virtually by St. Joseph's University due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, the Southeast Urban Invitational began being hosted by the Philadelphia High School for Girls. The 2022 Southeast Urban Invitational was once again held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both the 2023 and 2024 Southeast Urban Invitational have been held in person at the Philadelphia High School for Girls.
Teams from this Philadelphia Urban Initiative also regularly participate in Build It/Study It/Learn It Days, in which participants are assisted in the events by the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University.
