Wyoming Area High School is a Division C team from the Northeast region of Pennsylvania. They are fed by Wyoming Area Middle School, both of which make up the Wyoming Area Secondary Center.

History

Wyoming Area is one of the oldest teams in the state of Pennsylvania. The team was founded prior to the inception of the Northeast regional, and so they participated in the Eastern Regional from 1987 to 1990. They first qualified for states in 1989.

1991 to 1999

In the first Northeast regional in 1991, Wyoming Area immediately experienced success, placing 4th to qualify for states. After two 3rd-place finishes in the next two years, and a 5th-place finish in 1994, they broke out in 1995 with their first-ever regional championship, and their best-ever placement at states with 6th. This team was led by Dave Pagliarini, who finished with 13 career medals, the highest in program history at this time. This was also the first year in which a team defeated Stroudsburg High School at the northeast regional.

After 1995, Wyoming Area would finish out the 1990s incredibly strong. They would add another regional championship to their tally in 1997, and although Stroudsburg would defeat them at regionals in 1996 and 1998, Wyoming Area would get the better of Stroudsburg at states, finishing a program-best 4th place both times. In the case of both 4th-place finishes, the only teams to place higher were the elite trio of Harriton, State College, and Henderson.

2000 to 2011

After the turn of the century, although Wyoming Area's fortunes at states took a slight step back, they continued to be a strong force at regionals. They placed in the top 3 of regionals every year until 2011, continuing the streak that started in 1995, and placed in the top 10 of states several times (2001, 2003, 2006, 2009). They also won their most recent regional championship in 2005.

From 2008 to 2011, Wyoming Area placed second each year, losing to Athens Area High School each year. They finished 8th at the 2009 Pennsylvania State Tournament, which was their highest placement at the state tournament during the 2000s and their most recent top-10 finish. Unfortunately, they did not compete in 2012 because of school budget issues. However, they returned in 2013 to try to continue their legacy.

2013 and After

Since resuming competition in 2013, Wyoming Area has remained competitive in the Northeast region, though they have not yet returned to the top 20 of the state, peaking with a 21st-place finish at the 2017 Pennsylvania State Tournament. They also started attending invitationals during this time period, including the North Pocono Invitational and the Tiger Invitational.

In 2023, Wyoming Area did not qualify for the state tournament for the first time since the start of the Northeast regional. They finished in eighth place with 194 points. They narrowly missed qualification once again in 2024, finishing seventh, and only being kept out by out-of-region Strath Haven High School, which competed in the Northeast region for the year. In 2025, they earned a return to the state tournament with a 5th-place finish at regionals, and look to begin a new streak for years to come.
