The Central Pennsylvania regional is held at Millersville University. The 2025 competition was held on March 22, 2025.
As of the 2024-25 season, the region primarily serves the following counties: Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, Union, and York.
History
The Central regional first began competition in 1989, when it formed primarily out of the Eastern Regional (now Southeast Regional). It was hosted at Wilson College in Chambersburg, and covered a 20-county area. While its individual membership of teams has shifted from year to year, its overall geographic coverage has remained mostly unchanged since then.
Early Years
After exchanging hands a few times, the Central region came to be dominated by schools from State College for most of the 1990s into the early 2000s. After a 2nd place finish to Somerset Junior High School in 1992, State College Junior High School would go on to win the next seven consecutive regional championships, along with seven state championships and two national championships (1994 and 1995). State College Area High School would have an even longer reign, winning eleven consecutive regional championships from 1992 to 2002. Although the high school did not experience the same level of success as the junior high school, they did win the state championship in 1997 and placed top 10 at the national tournament every year from 1997 to 2002. To date, State College High remains the most successful program in regional history, boasting 14 total regional championships.
In 2000, State College Junior High ceased competition, being replaced by Park Forest Middle School and Mount Nittany Middle School, neither of which rostered ninth graders. Nevertheless, Park Forest continued to be successful, winning the region from 2000 to 2002, and placing 5th in the state in both 2001 and 2002.
In 1996, the host site for the Central regional changed for the first time, passing to Dickinson College in Carlisle.
Mid-2000s
2003 marked a new era in the region in multiple ways. First, Lebanon Valley College hosted the regional for the first time. Second, State College Area School District's domination of the region came to an end at the hands of Lemoyne Middle School and Bishop McDevitt High School. While State College High would regain the regional title in 2005, neither State College middle school has won the Central regional since.
The regional would be hosted at State College High in 2006 and 2007. After 2007, the host site changed to Millersville University, which continues to host the tournament today. When this occurred, the State College schools began attending the Northwest Pennsylvania Regional, which had recently switched to being held at Clarion University. They returned to the Central region in 2012.
The Millersville Years
In the years Millersville first began hosting the regional, the regional title changed hands multiple times in both divisions. At the start, Hershey Middle School extended their regional winning streak to six years, including 2009 when Hershey High School completed a Hershey regional sweep, the only time the Hershey schools accomplished this. They gave way to Spring Grove Area Middle School, who won in 2010 and 2011, followed by a brief but strong peak from Allen Middle School. In addition to Hershey, the other high schools to win regional titles during this period were Bishop McDevitt High School and Spring Grove Area High School.
In the mid-to-late 2010s, teams from Cumberland Valley School District began to dominate the region. From 2015 onward, Eagle View Middle School has won every Central regional tournament except for 2023, which was won by visiting Central East school Springhouse Middle School. Cumberland Valley High School has won every regional tournament since 2019, and in 2022, they became the first C Division team from the Central Region to finish first at the state tournament since State College Area High School.
COVID-19 and Temporary Hiatus
In 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Division B iteration of the Central regional was not held. Instead, teams competed in the temporary West Regional with teams from the Southwest and Northwest regionals. The Division C iteration was held virtually, with participation from some teams from the Central East Pennsylvania Regional, which was not run.
Past Regional Champions
This is a record of the past Regionals champions and runners up, and their respective places at the state competition. Scores at the regional competition may be shown in parentheses.
During the late 2000s and early 2010s, both divisions usually sent 4-5 teams to the state tournament, but in recent years, the region has grown significantly in size, and both divisions now send at least 6 teams.
