Regions of Michigan
This is a page regarding the regional competitions of Michigan. For more information regarding the state in general, please see the Michigan page.
Michigan, being one of the largest states in terms of the number of teams, is currently divided into 11 regions, each hosting a separate regional tournament for teams to compete for qualification to the state tournament. Many of these regions have existed since the early years of Science Olympiad, with many of the host locations having held the regional tournaments for similarly extensive histories. Each region serves certain counties, from as few as only one county to as many as sixteen counties.
Team bids for the state tournament are distributed to each of the regions in a manner proportional to the total number of teams in the state for each respective division. For example, if a region has 20 registered Division C teams and the state of Michigan as a whole has 250 Division C teams registered, the region (having 8% of the total Division C teams in the state) will receive 8% of the 60 total Division C bids to the state tournament (4.8 bids, which would be rounded up to 5). Also note that only primary teams are included in this calculation.
Beginning in the 2023 season, first place event winners at regional competitions receive a "Gold Bid" invitation to the state tournament for that specific event if their team fails to qualify for the state tournament as a whole.
