The Battle of the States is a satellite, asynchronous invitational tournament held by the Michigan Science Olympiad state organization. As of 2025, registration is limited to teams in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota. The tournament is unique in that it does not release overall team results; rather, for each event, states are ranked by the performance of teams from each state. State-level event ranks for both divisions are then added together to crown a champion state.

Format

The tournament is hosted on Scilympiad. Events are ran by volunteers organized by MSO, including student alumni from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, and Hope College. Registration is limited to certain states. In 2024, the tournament expanded to include Indiana, and in 2025 it expanded again to include Pennsylvania and Minnesota.

The tournament is broken into several week- or weeks-long sessions, with each event being offered during one of the sessions. Within each session, teams may complete the offered events at any time. Registration generally remains open throughout the tournament, allowing late teams to participate in the remaining sessions.
