Virginia has sent a team to the National Tournament every year since 2002, and in some prior years, though discontinuously. Science Olympiad started in Virginia as a competition within Fairfax County Public Schools, but it reorganized into an independent statewide organization in 2009, after which VASO saw significant and consistent growth. During the 2019-20 Coronavirus outbreak Virginia retained the highest percentage of its teams of any state, leading to a second Division B bid to the National Tournament for the first time in 2021. Virginia received a second Division C bid to the National Tournament the following year in 2022 when two other states declined to send a team.
History
During the first few years, from 2002-2005, several different teams won state in Division B. Since then, Longfellow Middle School has consistently won the state tournament, interrupted only once, in 2011 by Kilmer Middle School. They have finished strongly at Nationals, being in the top 10 several times and finishing in 5th at the 2022 National Tournament. Cooper Middle School has also experienced a rise in recent years. Several teams have won in Division C, with the major contenders typically being Fairfax High School, Langley High School, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, and Lake Braddock Secondary School. No team in Div C has won state more than three times in a row.
