At the Division B state tournament Menomonie Middle School won the state tournament title for the first time in school history. Morse Middle School finished as the state runner-up for the first time in school history, breaking their streak of winning the previous two state tournament titles. The third place team from this tournament is not known.
Previous to 1989, Wisconsin teams placed well at nationals. At the inaugural national tournament of 1985, Neenah placed 3rd, and at the 1988 nationals, Racine Washington Park placed 4th. At the 1986 nationals, Neenah placed 11th and Madison West placed 15th. At the 1987 nationals, Madison West placed 15th and Racine Washington Park placed 19th.
Such is the strength of Wisconsin teams that the nationals tournament invites 2 teams from Wisconsin.
At the Division C state tournament Madison West High School reclaimed the state title after a one year absence. Washington Park High School earned the state runner-up trophy, falling from winning the state tournament title in the previous year. Neenah High School finished as the third place team.
At nationals, Madison West placed 2nd and Racine Washington Park placed 11th.
Subsequent to 1989, Wisconsin teams placed well at nationals. At the 1990 nationals, Madison West placed 4th and Racine Washington Park placed 8th. At the 1991 nationals, Madison West placed 9th and Racine Washington Park placed 12th.

There were no regional tournaments for Division B in Wisconsin until 2010.
There were no regional tournaments for Division C in Wisconsin until 2004.
