2020-2021 Season (7th Grade)

This was the second season the Banana competed in Science Olympiad, Banana mainly focused on the events of Dynamic Planet, Meteorology, Codebusters, and Game On. Banana was thrown in game on after Eagle because of team circumstances. Tim's Meteo tests were amazing, but occasionally fried Banana's brains. Bananas crowning achievement for the 2021 season was placing 1st in meteorology at the BirdSO Invitational.Banana also co-wrote the meteorology exam for the Lexington Invitational. Banana wishes Harlan Rowe the best of luck at nationals and is looking forward to next year. Overall looking back on this season, Banana is kinda nostalgic, the feeling of online tourneys was fun but also lacking. He is proud of his achievements and looks back to this as one of his favorite seasons. He does admit he was very cringe in Blue! He also started the Federal Bird(or bonk ;)) Intelligence(FBI) server over last year filled with close online friends and competitors of his from across the country.

2021-2022 Season (8th Grade)

The 2021-2022 season was Banana's 3rd year participating in Science Olympiad. His events were EXPD, Dynamic Planet, Meteorology, Storm the Castle, Sounds of Music, and Electric Wright Stuff. Banana was looking forward to seeing his Meteo results and is building new planes as he writes this! End of Season Update: We made it to nationals! Banana placed 3 times at the 2022 National Tournament in Electric Wright Stuff, Experimental Design, and Sounds of Music! Banana is really happy with his team and feels grateful for the leaving 9th graders. His crowning achievement was his 3rd in EXPD at nats and his 5th in EWS.

2022-2023 Season (9th Grade)

The 2022-2023 Season was Bananas final season on the Shady Side Academy Div B Team. He had a lot of fun... regardless of the drama that occurred. Nationals was amazing! He finally managed to avenge the mistake he made at 2022 Nationals in Storm the Castle and almost won with one of his favorite partners! He also finally got to meet some people in person and this was probably his best season (peaked fr). Div C here we go!

2023-2024 Season (10th Grade)

Rather questionable of a season but quite fun? Though he had to cope with the loss of his trusty trajectory event partner, he finally was able to get the HS team back to a semi-decent level of competitiveness... with the help of his other captains and the team! Banana didn't do as well as he had hoped this season in general, but on the bright side he grinded bio and earth sci and camped USESO and USABO! Perhaps next year he will do bio events... jk get baited. BUILDS 4 LIFE.

MS Science Olympiad Reflection

Dear Div B Scioly,

Thank you so much for all that you have given me. The fun experiences, friends, and competition(Gordon) that I will never forget. I came to SSA wanting to do Scioly, it was a driving factor of me coming, but saying I knew what I was getting myself into is an understatement. I showed up to my first ever work session in 6th grade, not knowing the next 4 years would be filled with amazing experiences, conflict, 7pm build sessions, or getting my hand smashed with a hammer(you know who you are...). The only things in my mind during 6th grade were 1. MTV and how to beat Jeffrey and the A team, and 2. Invitational hotel trips can be quite fun... I was just there for fun, for friends, and for the pizza(Mrs. Maxwell I uh I owe you some money to say the least). It was just pure amazingness, and I truly got entrenched in the thrill and excitement of Scioly. Then the dark times came... We had just won our regional tournament(I was an alternate so I spent all day eating Chick Fil A and running around Cal U doing dumb stuff) with the lowest score in Pennsylvania regional history, and then it all hit. One competition followed another and soon Pennsylvania got cancelled... Being a passionate 6th grader with questionable judgement, wanna know what I did? Wrote an angry email to Dave Moyer and the SW PA regional director using of all people, my parents emails. Looking back maybe not the best decision... But something to laugh about now and realize how naive and ignorant I was and perhaps still am...

7th grade comes along and I do even more unpredictable Banana stuff, perhaps involving a Coup... I came back the next year after building countless gliders in my basement as a member of the A team and for some reason the main Meteorology person... Man did that go wrong, after 3 competitions of pure horror and not knowing anything, we finally turned it around! Meteorology became an amazing event(plus this is the one year I actually beat Gordon).... Meteo was a safehaven, a protective atmosphere(hehe get it?), perhaps not the healthiest coping strategy, but one that worked. Not only that but I finally started my journey of Tuesday/Thursday 4-6 sessions with Mr Erler, doing what else but building Electric Wright Stuff planes and praying that next season would be the one. Oh and now the part you're waiting for... the coup. Our captains this year were amazing, but also busy with many other tasks, and a slightly immature Evan decided to take advantage of this, and force his way into the captains seat. Now I could bore you with the details, but I won't, I will say that I truly regret some of the things I did during this period and people I might've hurt(Sorry Anna AP, you were amazing at your events and a great person). Oh and who could forget Game On, the mythical event, that I somehow got myself thrown into(seeing a trend yet?). Perhaps not the best event, perhaps we weren't the best at it ever, but hey we did well enough... States crushed me I will be honest, seeing that we had gotten worse, dropped to fifth after a season of hard work and hopeful dreams hurt. I vividly remember seeing the results due to leaks and just crying my eyes out knowing that we hadn't come close to what we wanted.

8th grade now comes, the season of redemption and a season of true happiness. This was honestly my favorite Scioly Season ever, the people were amazing and I finally figured out how the hell to study and build at the same time. The new 7th graders on A team were amazing and truly truly carried us quite well. The 4-6 sessions continued as always and all was well, we built, flew, built, flew and I truly felt carefree and happy. Then we got word that nationals was changed to online, sadness ensued, though not long lasting after we scheduled our first in person invy in 2 years. Sounds of Music was a ride but we figured it out, somehow with partner changes, no instrument until february, but we eventually figured it out through the countless hours of wikipedia spam. Storm the Castle oh my, perhaps uh not the best experience, but my partner was amazing(Hanna) and though our damn STC decided to break, we had a great time testing it and firing it. Now states this year... I truly didn't believe that we would make nats, but we fucking did. We. Had. Made. It. My dreams of redemption came alive and I was flooded by thoughts of placing in my favorite event Meteo... Then the day of nats came, I finished meteo, and just sat in my seat and cried. I knew I hadn't placed and I knew that my entire season of work was futile. I just wasn't there. And yet somehow I pulled up with medals in EXPD OF ALL THE EVENTS WHICH WE HAD SUCKED AT ALL SEASON, sounds which lowkey no idea how that happened, and EWS which felt amazing.

9th grade comes along and I feel a sense of perhaps nostalgia for the old days, when Scioly was stress free and I didn't have to do anything. This season wasn't the best, in terms of relations, my relations with Mr Erler perhaps tumbled a bit, and yet we still fought through it at the end of the day. None of this does justice to my amazing partners who truly carried and helped we stay alive through this hectic season. I'll always remember the email to the 9th graders about uh "climbing into bed together as soon as we got t the hotel" lapse in judgement, yes. Fun? also yes. Nationals. I FINALLY GOT TO GO TO IN PERSON NATIONALS. THE DREAM HAD COME TRUE. Not only that but I was able to place in meteo and redeem myself in Storm the Castle and get a National Runner Up medal. Those two moments are the happiest in my Scioly career. Same as the roller coaster hell week during Spring Break, the storm the castle scope settings, and the amount of hamilton played. Scioly has given me so much and made me realize so much, I've made friends, lost friends, gained friends back, made online friends, met my online friends, gotten countless connections, made thousands of memories, and gained insight into what I love about Science and how to contribute back to a community that has given me so much. I figured out that I truly love engineering, but also love earth sci and biology... And now another chapter of scioly continues, onto Div C!

Love, Evan
