Summersaurus (Summer) is currently a seventh grader at Shady Side Academy Middle School. She has participated in Science Olympiad (Sci Oly) for two years and has met many people she now considers close friends through the program. Though she routinely gets carried by her partners, Summer still tries her best.

This would probably be a good time to mention that Summer struggles with having confidence. Though her partners, teammates, and coaches all insist that she is a necessary part of the team's success, she still believes that everything the team has accomplished would be entirely possible without her contributions, and that is only if what she has done for Sci Oly can even be called a contribution.

Deep down, she does not know what would have happened if she had not done Science Olympiad as it has been the anchor in her life for her seventh grade year. She devoted almost all of her 'not at work session' Science Olympiad time into studying for Codebusters, and when she was at work sessions Summer spent most of her time in the gym flying planes.

Summer showed up to almost all (if not all) of the work sessions offered by the coaches, but the only thing Summer can say with confidence is that she was definitely dedicated and committed to Science Olympiad.

2021-2022 Season

The 2021-2022 season was Summer's chance to do whatever she wanted without getting a result that actually affected the team. She didn't actually study and spent her basically two-month-long Science Olympiad experience having fun and annoying (stalking) the older kids. Summer experimented with events as part of the B Team and quickly found that she liked Codebusters despite being absolutely horrible at it. She did not get another chance to compete in Codebusters as many other kids wanted to give the event a try but to this day wishes that she could have given the event another chance. She also discovered that she disliked Road Scholar and Solar System. Summer enjoyed Write It Do It (WIDI) but didn't particularly like the event. Summer hoped to do Sci Oly again the following year.

2022-2023 Season

The 2022-2023 season was when Summer actually took Science Olympiad seriously. She originally had no clue which events she was going to do. (Summer wanted to do Codebusters but knew that she was quite horrible at it.) She got drafted into Experimental Design (EXPD) and Codebusters at the beginning of the season and somehow got put in Flight and Storm after Dick Smith. The team went to a few in person invitationals which were all tons of fun! Summer tried some new events and ended up doing Code, EXPD, Flight, and Roller as her events for Regionals, States, and Nationals. Looking back, Summer can confidently say that she had a blast at all the competitions she attended. She loved exploring the campuses at the universities and enjoyed attempting to navigate through high school buildings. (She didn't exactly struggle but it was a fun 'challenge' to get around without a map.)

  • abbreviated Anatomy and Physiology to Anat, Codebusters to Code, Experimental Design to EXPD, Roller Coaster to Roller, Sounds of Music to Sounds, Storm the Castle to Storm, Team Placement to Team, and Event Average to Aver. to make everything fit on the table
  • team placement is for A Team as majority of events were on the A Team & it looks better :D
  • will recalculate averages if the unknowns ever are changed
  • event/invitational averages are rounded to the nearest hundredth and include B Team scores
  • team placement not included in invitational averages

To be fair, Summer has only done some of these events once and that experience probably was not fair to the event, but first impressions make all the difference, right?

Competition Review (credits to Aptdon)

Summer does not feel that she can really say much about test quality or the way a test writer graded a test, but she can definitely share how she felt while competing that day!

2021-2022 Season

Dick Smith Memorial 2021 (Online)

Summer probably did the best in this invitational out of all of the ones she competed in during her sixth grade year. She randomly took tests and ran around the school building with other children. Since she did not really care about the results, Summer was not disappointed with her low placing. She was only there to have fun!

Westlake 2022 (Online)

This was another fun experience for Summer. Like for Dick Smith, she randomly chose two events she thought would be interesting and winged them!

Solon 2022 (Online)

Summer genuinely can't tell the difference between her experiences at online competitions during her sixth grade year. She just remembers having tons of fun and running around the school. After doing WIDI at Westlake, Summer wanted to give herself another chance to find out if she truly enjoyed the event or not. Looking back, she thinks that WIDI was interesting.

Centerville 2022 (Online)

Summer was kind of sad that this would be her last Sci Oly experience for her sixth grade year, but she still had fun! Since she only had one event that was at the end of the day, Summer spent her time running around helping the busy older kids in the morning. It was when she was watching the older kids do EXPD that she decided that she was going to do Science Olympiad in the following year and that she would take it seriously! She also decided that EXPD would be fun.

2022-2023 Season

Dick Smith Memorial 2022 (Online)

Summer was only a little bit worried about competing at Dick Smith. Since it was the first tournament of the year, it was like a first impression to the kids on the team she hoped to be on. (At this point Summer was still trying to prove that she had what it took to make the A Team.) Summer had fun and did quite well in the events she did on the A Team (mostly because of her partners).

Kenston 2023 (In-Person)

Kenston was an interesting tournament experience. As Summer's first in person invitational ever, she was mostly worried about not getting lost. She was given four events to do and placed in three of them, which was good enough for Summer's standards at that moment. (Her standards definitely increased as the season went on. This might have been because they full scored EXPD at Kenston!) She screwed up in Flight and accidentally let the rubber go (losing a torque) before putting it on the plane, so they didn't place as high as they could've. Summer still blames herself for that one despite her partner insisting that it wasn't her fault (since it was the first time she actually did Flight at a competition).

Pitt 2023 (In-Person)

Summer thought that Pitt was an organizational mess, but at least she had fun running across a few streets! Anyway, Pitt was an interesting experience since Summer didn't have her usual partners in half her events, but she still did pretty good anyway. Since Pitt only gave out prizes for top five, Summer got something in three out of the four events she did (again) and didn't place in Code (again). Now, she didn't have her usual partners for Kenston or Pitt so Summer wasn't too disappointed. However, this was Summer's first taste of placing one place out of the award giving range. (This was the first moment of many similar ones that Summer would experience.)

Mentor 2023 (In-Person)

To Summer, Mentor was very similar to Kenston. High school invitationals were much easier to navigate. Anyway, what made Mentor different from Kenston was that they had these unique spinning medals. Although she came one spot from placing (again), this time it was in Flight and not in Code, so Summer was able to cope. Despite Flight and Code not placing as high as Summer would've liked, she still got two first place medals which completely made up for it. Summer only has two actual regrets from Mentor. One is not placing in Flight, and the other is that her Mentor medal for Storm is somewhat broken (doesn't spin properly). However, on the bright side, her Mentor EXPD medal (she cares more about that one than the Storm one) works perfectly so she's fine.

University of Michigan 2023 (In-Person)

Michigan was the only invitational that the team actually won, so Summer remembers it well. Despite only having three events, Summer found that getting around the campus was extremely inconvenient. (The Flight place was like a twenty minute run [sprint] from her home base.) Anyhow, their EXPD streak continued and they got third in Flight. However, this was another one of those experiences where Summer placed one place out of the awards places. (Is there an obvious trend? Well, hold that thought.)

Pennsylvania Southwest Regionals 2023 (In-Person)

Regionals was a funny experience, or as Banana calls it, "a literal joke". (Yes, that is a direct quote.) The team placed 1st with a score of 28 points! This score tied their all time high score for Regionals. They won Flight with a not-even-two-minute flight and EXPD even though they got off-topiced! Summer enjoyed running around Regionals and ended up with four gold medals in four events, so she was very happy! Oh, she also picked up Roller for Regionals and somehow ended up sticking with it all the way to Nationals.

Pennsylvania States 2023 (In-Person)

States was probably the most anxious Summer had ever felt in her life, ever. The whole day was a roller coaster of emotions as her teammates reported how their events went. After Harlan Rowe got third overall, the team pretty much erupted in cheers (and got shushed by Banana), but we knew we had made Nationals! Of course Springhouse was going to beat us, but at least we would experience something our coaches had been telling us about (they attended the last National Tournament at Wichita in 2007)! Summer personally was disappointed with two second place medals (Code was understandable but they lost Flight to Harlan Rowe by three seconds), but at least they won EXPD!

Nationals 2023 (In-Person)

Summer honestly had a blast on the Nationals trip. Despite there being inner team conflicts and Summer spending many nights sitting in a stairwell attempting to help someone fix their problems (and them helping her fix her own problems), the actual tournament was great! Summer saw many new faces and finally met Aptdon (though he didn't know her at the time and was focused on attempting to meet Banana). Overall Summer wasn't very happy with how she did at Nationals (got seventh in Code and Flight [lost by three seconds again], they gave out top 6 for medals). Their EXPD result was honestly surprising since they did everything like they did for all the other tournaments (and placed top three or higher at every single one of those). Roller placing ninth was literally a miracle, though!

Acknowledgements

As mentioned before, Summer believes that she pretty much always gets carried by her partners, so it's only fitting to give them all shoutouts here as none of her achievements would be possible without them!

Banana: There's too many things to say, so I won't say any of them because that would just make an annoyingly long wall of text. Just know that I am extraordinarily grateful for your support in my events as you were my partner in three out of four of them when it mattered how well we did. You say you're stupid, but you really aren't, and I genuinely hope you come to realize that before you keep saying that you're stupid.

Bird: You are definitely one of the most motivating people in Science Olympiad. I don't really need to say more, but you're basically the reason I committed myself to learning how to do Codebusters (and I don't regret wasting my time on Puzzle Baron)!

Rain: You're a really interesting guy. Thank you for pushing me to do better in all of my events.

Hanna: Thank you for teaching me how to do my part in Experimental Design. We made such great memories when trying to work that high pressure sink at Michigan! We didn't really practice EXPD, but that's okay as we still had a great time!

Emily: Thank you for agreeing to be my partner so I could try out Sounds of Music! Though neither of us actually studied, we did quite well for a first attempt! Though you didn't make the A Team, you were extremely supportive of me which I greatly appreciate.

With her school (middle school, Div B) no longer offering Science Olympiad, Summer hopes to compete in Div C (high school level) in the years to come! (Note: She did manage to compete in Div C and currently competes in six events. Her latest achievement was medalling in all six of said events at CMU.)
