Texas is a member state in Science Olympiad. An early member of Science Olympiad, the state has continually seen a strong interest from schools across the state in Science Olympiad. A numerous amount of invitational and regional tournaments take place in the state. The state tournament typically occurs at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, from which two teams will typically advance to the state tournament from each division.
Notable invitationals in the state include the Cypress Falls Invitational, Seven Lakes Invitational, and the UT Invitational.
History
Texas Science Olympiad has been around since the first year of national competition in 1984, when Klein High School finished 11th and Deer Park High School finished 19th. Texas teams have consistently placed in the top 10 at Nationals for the past decade in both divisions, with Beckendorff Junior High School claiming a national championship in 2014 and Seven Lakes High School winning in 2025. Texas historically sent two teams from both divisions to Nationals starting in 2005, until 2018 when only one team from the C Division was sent to represent Texas at Nationals. Current strong Division B teams include BASIS Cedar Park, Beckendorff Junior High School, Kealing Junior High School, and Seven Lakes Junior High School. Current strong Division C teams include Clements High School, Jordan High School, Liberal Arts and Science Academy, and Seven Lakes High School. In 2024 BASIS Cedar Park won the B Division State Tournament in the school's first year of competition in Science Olympiad, breaking a long streak of dominance in the B Division by Beckendorff Junior High School. In 2025 Liberal Arts and Science Academy won the C Division state tournament, breaking a six-year long streak held by Seven Lakes High School by just four points.

Format
Texas runs an open regional system, where teams may register for any regional tournament in the state. Texas expands the 23-event national slate with 5 additional events, of which teams select any 23 at each tournament to count towards their overall score. Texas uses a non-standard overall results tiebreaker, using a head-to-head comparison rather than the count-of-highest-event-ranks comparison that is typical in most of the nation.
