Missouri has historically been divided into 8 regions, serving the state's 114 counties (and one independent city). Each region holds both a Division B and Division C tournament, which typically occur at the same time. However, certain regions may hold separate tournaments for each division. These tournaments are closed, and teams must attend the tournament for the region that they are located in. If a team performs well enough at the tournament for their region, then that team will advance to the state tournament. Missouri also utilizes a First Place Overall Winner (FPOW) system similar to that used in states like North Carolina--if an individual places first in an event at a regional tournament and their team does not qualify for state, they may compete in that event at the state tournament.
Missouri's regional map has changed three notable times—once in 2012, again in 2015, and in 2025. In 2012, the state's regional lines were redrawn to include a ninth region known as the South Central Missouri Regional (or simply Region 9). This region was short-lived however, and was dissolved in 2015 resulting in the state's current regional lines.
For the 2025 season, Missouri State University could not host the state tournament due to construction on it's campus. The University of Central Missouri (UCM), the traditional host of the Region 4 tournament, is hosting the state tournament for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Due to the logistical challenges of holding both a regional and the state tournament at the same location, UCM elected to not host the Region 4 for the 2025 season. It was decided to not hold the Region 4 tournament for 2025 instead of finding a new location, and it's counties have been redistributed to Region 3, Region 5, and Region 7.
