Pleasantville Middle School (PMS, known shortly as Pville), is a public middle school that competes in Division B. PMS is located in the village of Pleasantville, New York, in Westchester County. The school competes in the Lower-Hudson Valley Region. They have advanced to the New York State tournament consistently, only missing state in their first year. Pleasantville Middle School has approximately 550 students, and serves grades five through eight. PMS gets fed into by Bedford Road Elementary School, and feeds into Pleasantville High School, which also has a Science Olympiad team. Their motto, “Read the Rules," was the mantra of their Science Olympiad program founders Drs. Chuck and Martha Matteo.

PMS has an "A,” "B," and “C” team, which all compete in regionals (and most invitationals), but only their "A" team goes to states.

Compared to the rest of the major schools in New York, Pleasantville is easily the smallest school (in both size and students). However, this has caused the PMSSO team to carry an 'underdog' spirit with them even with their more recent major successes. All of their coaches are volunteer coaches. Their placements at the New York State tournaments are getting increasingly better each year. Pleasantville’s consistent success at both the regional and state level proves that you don’t need to be a giant, super-funded school to accomplish great things.

Season Overviews

2024-2025 Season

The 2024-2025 was Pleasantville's best and most legendary season to date. It marks the first time that Pville brought 9th graders back to the team. They started the season by placing 8th at the Dodgen-Walton Invitational and 29th at the Rickards Invitational. The season really picked up when Pleasantville placed 4th at the Brown University Invitational for their first appearance. For their first appearance at Division Ave. High School's Blue Dragon Invitational since 2017, Pville placed 3rd, only 4 points behind state champion Bay Academy. For their first appearance at the Cornell Invitational, Pville placed 5th, gaining 14 medals. At the Lower-Hudson Regional Tournament, Pville placed 1st for the fourth time. In the time between the regional tournament and the state tournament, the Pville 'Varsity Team' (a group of the strongest members of the team), trained very hard. They attended 4-hour long study sessions every Sunday, and did many practice tests, with many students setting their sights on the national tournament. Although Pville didn't make it to the University of Nebraska 2025 National Tournament (by a mere 8 points), they left the highly competitive New York State Tournament with their highest placement ever, 3rd. The 2024-2025 season officially established Pleasantville as a legitimate team, that is capable of doing well at invitational, regional, and state tournaments. The season also ended the rivalry between Pville and Seven Bridges Middle School (see Pleasant Bridges) and created a new friendship.

Results

Pleasantville has consistently gotten in the top five in regionals, and in more recent years, has jumped around in the top 3 spots. In their eleven years at states, they have gotten in the top 20. Their 2025 score at regionals (52) is most likely considered to be the lowest (best) score in the history of the region. At the 2025 New York State Competition, Pleasantville placed third (their best placement at the state tournament yet), 8 points away from making it to the National Tournament.
