Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST or TJ for short) is a Division C team that competes in Virginia's Mary Washington Regional. The school is a member of Fairfax County Public Schools. Since its establishment in 2009, the team has qualified for the National Tournament five times (in 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019, and 2021), and in 2019, they set a school and state record by placing 12th overall.

TJHSST was established in 1985 as a STEM magnet program serving Northern Virginia. It is a Virginia Governor's School currently accepting students from the following jurisdictions:

Team History

TJHSST Science Olympiad (also known as TJ Science Olympiad or TJSO) was formed in 2009 by a group of former Science Olympiad competitors who wanted to participate in high school as well. The team began competing in the 2009-10 season, getting 2nd place regionally and 3rd place at the state tournament. Since then, TJSO has won every regional tournament it has attended, and has never placed lower than 4th at the state level.

After its somewhat unremarkable initial years, the team did manage to break to the national tournament twice in the early-mid 2010s, placing 25th and 23rd in 2013 and 2014, but then hit a string of placing second at the state tournament during the three following seasons. The 2018 team managed to turn that around, winning the state tournament and placing 26th at nationals, and this set the groundwork for the present-day TJSO team. TJSO really rose to national prominence in 2019, placing 12th at that year's national tournament and changing its status from a relatively unknown Virginia team to a national powerhouse.

Team Structure

TJSO fields three teams during the first section of the season. These teams, normally named Blue, Red, and White after school colors, have been unstacked since the 2013-14 season and all compete together at the same tournaments. The strength of TJSO's unstack is considered a point of pride for the team. Following the regional tournament, TJSO consolidates into a 15-member stacked team which represents the school for the rest of the season. In past years, TJSO has taken regional team alternates, though this practice fell out of use in the late 2010s. States team alternates, on the other hand, are still selected every year, and many team members (including team officers) have been states team alternates at some point in their careers.

TJSO's team leadership comprises an officer corps (elected in the spring) and faculty sponsors. Since the 2017-18 season, the team has had seven officers:

Two co-captains
One communications secretary
One publicist
Two tech event directors
One head of IT

Traditionally, the team has had one faculty sponsor, though that increased to three in 2018-19 and has been at two since the 2019-20 season. The faculty sponsors serve as liaisons for financial work and interactions with school administration, as well as being the individuals in charge of assembling TJ's stacked and unstacked teams. Aside from these duties, much of TJSO is student-run, with the officers conducting tryouts, managing meetings, and providing members with support and resources.
