Just a guy who likes doing Scioly. If you've been to a competition in Georgia this year, chances are I was there. Former Brookwood Scioly competitor from 2023 - 2025 and current freshman at Georgia Tech involved with the Yellow Jacket Invitational and Georgia States C.

fun fact! I didn't build my first competition bridge until Columbia! I built one really crappy bridge in practice early in the season and convinced myself that I was awful at construction. However for Columbia, I was paired with someone who had never done the event before, so I was forced to try again and boy am I glad I did. (My first real bridge ever was 50g and my Columbia bridge was 25g 💀)

fun fact 2! I almost didn't get that Wifi Lab medal at regionals. I got scheduled for 4 other events which was the maximum allowed in our club, but due to a last minute drop out, I was able to sub in and earn my only physics event medal.

My introduction to Scioly was shaky to say the least. I was originally one of those people who showed up to practice and just talked with their friends instead of doing work. The first catalyst to change this however, was being placed on my school's C team while my friends ended up on the B team. It made me realize that I can't just sit back and do the bare minimum like how I used to do for school. That discontent only strengthened as I saw my friends on B team win their first medals at BISOT while I stayed medal-less. Columbia marked the turning point in my performance once I hit my stride with Bridge. Medaling in Wifi Lab was also a nice bonus, especially considering that I placed above our A team for that event, despite our awful antenna. All in all, I might not have continued as strongly with Scioly as I did had I not medaled at regionals, which I'm very grateful for seeing just how much Scioly has given me.

This was the season where I felt like I had finally hit my stride. First semester was kind of rough and not being selected for the States team hurt, but second semester the medals started rolling in. Scrambler was perhaps the highlight of this season for me. Even though I never wanted to do the event, and I never did that well in it, Scrambler showed me what it meant to actually be a builder, and inspired me to choose engineering over anything else for my career.

After Brookwood lost state by 2 points last year, I realized that if we had gotten just 1st instead of 3rd in Bridge, we would've kept our State streak. To fix this, me and the two (later three) balsa builders of our school created a group chat that we dubbed The Balsa Lab. It was a place where we could strategize about how we approached the balsa build for our school and collaborate instead of each team doing their own thing. Even though the season ended for two of us at Regionals, Brookwood's 1st place Tower at State was the collaborative effort of all four of us, and created bonds that I'll never forget.

This season definitely felt a little sad. After coming off our first season without Nats in a long time, we all felt like we had something to prove, one last chance to fix things. But with each competition, it became more and more obvious just how outclassed we were, and it felt frustrating working so hard to achieve that dream, but being denied at every turn. This was definitely my best season performance-wise, but it took a lot out of all of us.
