Placement History
2019-2020 (7th Grade, Division B)
I was accidentally initially admitted to the team in 7th grade as a regular team member but was made an alternate shortly before competition season because there were too many team members :p I got some experience observing the other team members before the season was cut short by the pandemic. Funnily enough, I had to fill in for two events that would later become some of my favorites - butterfly effect much?
2020-2021 (8th Grade, Division B)
I got my first medal experience during an awards livestream and sorta figured out what I was doing in Science Olympiad this year. Disease Detectives was the only event I did consistently this year and it's kinda stuck with me since then. State went atrociously and we were quite far from making nationals, but I was looking forward to joining Jordan Science Olympiad! (foreshadowing)
2021-2022 (9th Grade, Division C)
This year was quite a lot! I went all in on Science Olympiad; after being placed on the B team at the start of the year, I stayed after school almost every day to work on Ping Pong Parachute. I brought home the launch apparatus for the two week winter break and grinded out Rocks and Minerals as well, leading to a stark improvement in my placements that landed me a spot on state team. I did not do as well as I had hoped in a lot of my events at State, and this was my first real taste at missing out on nationals.
2022-2023 (10th Grade, Division C)
I became the C team captain this year, which was a lot of responsibility for me as a sophomore. I more deeply understood studying this year, as shown by my greater success in my events, and started test-writing as well. I even got the opportunity to travel out of state to the Golden Gate Invitational. I did better at state this year but still wasn't able to make nationals.
2023-2024 (11th Grade, Division C)
With my experience as a team captain, I was selected as the new vice president for our club. I helped plan the trip to the MIT Invitational, and in order to partially fund this trip I helped launch our new JSO Invitational as a tournament director. We made another push for nationals and tied for second, but lost the tiebreaker and missed out on nationals by the slimmest of margins (1 event difference in a head-to-head tiebreaker). Out of my 6 years competing, Texas State 2024 was probably the most tragic awards ceremony I attended. Our team's founding coach retired this year, leaving behind a huge absence for us to fill.
2024-2025 (12th Grade, Division C)
My final year competing in Science Olympiad was also my most challenging. I was hit by a 3 event conflict in September, (Disease, Fossils, and Wind Power) forcing me to find other events. Due to the lack of a willing sponsor, our team was close to needing to skip almost all invitationals. Thankfully, an interim coach was put in place right before competition season started who supported our endeavors. My vice president and I took on a portion of the load previously handled by our old coach, making me even more appreciative for everything she had done for us. We barely managed to put together the MIT Invitational trip again. We were a lot more successful with the JSO Invitational, expanding it significantly compared to its first year. In my final push to make nationals, we fell short yet again. I never made nationals as a competitor in Science Olympiad and will always envy those that have, but I am proud of what our team has been able to accomplish in its early years. Although I'm watching far away from California, I look forward to seeing what Jordan will do in the future!
