Team History
During the 2020-2021 school year, Central High School founded its Science Olympiad Team during virtual instruction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In their first year, Central placed first in the 2021 Southeast Urban Pennsylvania Tournament and 16th in the 2021 Southeast Pennsylvania Regional, which was the highest placement of any school within the city of Philadelphia. Central's main rival, Julia R. Masterman School, came right behind Central in 17th place.
In 2022, Central participated in four virtual invitational tournaments before repeating as champions of the Southeast Urban Pennsylvania Tournament. At the 2022 Southeast Pennsylvania Regional, Central placed 18th. This was the second highest placement for schools within the city of Philadelphia, with Julia R. Masterman School placing 15th.
In 2023, Central participated in two virtual invitational tournaments and one in-person invitational tournament before repeating as three-time consecutive champions of the Southeast Urban Pennsylvania Tournament. At the 2023 Southeast Pennsylvania Regional, Central placed 9th and Julia R. Masterman School placed 10th. As a result they were the first two public Philadelphia high schools to qualify for the PA State Science Olympiad Tournament in the 21st century, and the first ones to qualify since Northeast High School did so in 1993. At the 2023 PA State Science Olympiad Tournament, Julia R. Masterman School placed 14th and Central placed 23rd.
In 2024, Central participated in two virtual invitational tournaments and two in-person invitational tournaments before repeating as a record setting four-time consecutive champions of the Southeast Urban Pennsylvania Tournament. At the 2024 Southeast Pennsylvania Regional, Central placed 8th and Julia R. Masterman School placed 7th, which set a new 21st-century record for highest Southeast regional placement for any public Philadelphia high school. This resulted in both Central and Julia R. Masterman School qualifying for the 2024 PA State Science Olympiad Tournament. At the 2024 PA State Science Olympiad Tournament, Julia R. Masterman School placed 15th and Central placed 20th.
