ThePoePoeGuy (aka FermiSweatTheSecond) is currently a member of the American High School SciOly Team. He was previously a part of Thornton Junior High School's (now Thornton Middle School) team in 8th grade. He keeps clinging on to his 5th place Fermi Questions medal at NorCal states in 2024 and swears that he's actually really good at Fermi Questions and that the only reason he didn't place higher than 5th at Rickards 2025 was that he was just "rusty". He's also very salty about Hovercraft and Bungee Drop being in rotation when perfectly good events (Sounds of Music and Fermi Questions) are right there ready to be rotated back in.

Events, Tournaments, and Results

2022-2023 Season

This was my first year in Science Olympiad. Unfortunately, because of this, I was not able to get into the A team, as every single person on the A team was in SciOly the year previously (almost regardless of ability). Although, I was an alternate for states in case someone had an emergency (unfortunately, that didn't happen). I also got WIDI when I was accepted but it was TAKEN AWAY because Sounds Of Music was "already 2 events and I'd technically have 5 events if I was doing WIDI" (as you can tell I am extremely salty about my Division B experience).

Despite all of these setbacks, I had a lot of fun and did surprisingly well in the tournamets I did attend, even getting medals in all my events in BARSO.

I never got my 5th place High Desert medal even thought they were shipped to my coach :(

2023-2024 Season

My second year of Science Olympiad was where I really started to find my place. I competed in a total of 5 events, most of which I thoroughly enjoyed. My medal at states (just behind FermiSweat's 3rd place) earned me the honorary title FermiSweatTheSecond. Despite my personal success, our team didn't do so great; 8th at states was somewhat expected, but 4th at regionals (mainly because two of Castro Valley's teams got 1st and 2nd) was pretty demotivating. Hopefully we can do a bit better with the new season.

Event Reviews

Flight

I did Flight B for 1 year in 8th grade, being my first pure build event (and probably the reason I do mainly builds now). I did not try out for it, but I had prior knowledge about stuff like lift, angle of attack, and pitch, so it was not a completely new experience for me.

My 11th place at High Desert was nothing notable. I did remember we did some Flight testing prior to recording the submitted video and one of our planes got stuck on the roof trusses.

Flight at Kennedy was slightly different. Because they couldn't test all 40 something teams for Flight in time for awards, each team had to submit a video, and the top 18 teams would compete in the actual event. I luckily got into the top 18, but at the actual competition, the first plane I tested nosedived straight into the ground while going clockwise (the opposite direction it was supposed to turn). Luckily my second plane worked (I think it hit the ceiling a couple times) but I got 10th so it didn't really matter.

My first and only medal was 2nd place in BARSO with a time of 1:57 (I think). I remember in the gym where the Flight testing took place, there was an open air vent on the ceiling with a slight breeze coming out of it. I had to strategically place the plane so that it would circle around the wind and not get pushed off path. This medal in particular was quite surprising; Flight was my lowest placing event for both invitationals, but I bumped it up to 2nd at regionals, which I was super happy about.

Overall, Flight was quite fun. Flight also gave me my first exposure to cyanoacrylate glue through way overgluing wood pieces together and sticking my fingers to the plane/other fingers way too often. Thankfully, Flight prepared me for any future uses of CA glue and I have not severely stuck my fingers to anything using CA glue ever since.

Rating: 7.8/10, too much CA glue
