Overview

ThatWaterQualityGuy(pronouns he/him) started competing in Science Olympiad in 2018 at Eagle View Middle School in PA. From September of 2018 - March of 2020, he competed for Eagle View in the events of Density Lab, Potions & Poisons, Ornithology, Dynamic Planet, Food Science, and his favorite event: Water Quality (hence his user name). After Covid-19 shut down the 2019- 2020 season, he graduated to Cumberland Valley High School, where he competed as a senior in Forestry, Green Generation, and Environmental Chemistry. At past division C invitationals, he has competed in events such as Ornithology, Water Quality, Dynamic Planet, Remote Sensing, Chemistry Lab, and Cell Biology. Currently, he is attending Juniata College and is studying to become an environmental scientist.

Officer Positions

He was elected to the officer position of Coordinator in May of 2021. In Cumberland Valley, the coordinator is in charge of test trading, and assembling tests and test writers for the invitational the team hosts: Eagle Invitational. He served as the coordinator for the Cumberland Valley Science Olympiad team that earned first in the 2022 PA state tournament. Enjoying the coordinator position and feeling that there were others who were better suited for the role as team president for the 2022-2023 season, he decided not to run for president and instead ran again for the coordinator position, this time winning it easily. He was the first coordinator for Cumberland Valley to serve more than one term.

Metals and Notable Achievements

Over the years, he has amassed 64 total(divisions B and C) metals and awards: 30 firsts, 7 seconds, 8 thirds, 5 fourths, 8 fifths, 3 sixths, 2 sevenths, and 1 eighth. Some of his most notable achievements include earning first place in Food Science at the Rustin invitational in 2020, earning 3rd place* in Green Generation at Solon in 2022, earning 1st place in Green Generation at SOUP in 2022, earning 1st in Green Generation and 2nd in Ornithology at the 2022 PA state tournament, and earning 10th in Green Generation at the 2022 national tournament. In 2023, he has earned 3rd in Forestry and 5th in Green Generation at Solon as well as 4th in Forestry and 5th in Green Generation at SOUP. At the 2023 PA State Finals, he again was the champion in Green Generation and also earned first place in Environmental Chemistry.

*Note: due to the reuse of the would-be Battle at Valley Forge test for Green Generation at Solon in 2022, official records say that he got first. However, because he had already seen the Battle at Valley Forge due to it's release in a test set, he and his partner knew all the answers and the event was trialed for the Solon tournament. After looking at the raw score that he got from when he took the test as a practice test(the night before the tournament), he most likely would have gotten 3rd at Solon. Due to this discrepancy, ThatWaterQualityGuy has a first place metal in an event that he should have gotten 3rd in. Because of this, he counts it as a 3rd place overall.

Test Writing

He has written tests for invitationals such as the Eagle Invitational, BirdSO div. B Satellite Invitational, and SOAPS div. B and C. For Eagle Invitational, he wrote part of the Density Lab and Food Science tests in 2021, the Green Generation test and part of the Food Science test in 2022, and the Green Generation test, Forestry test, and Whatchamacallit test for 2023. This last event was a trial that he largely created in which participants are asked to ID many different organisms by their common name. In 2024, he helped write the Forestry test and the Ecology test for Eagle Invitational, and in 2025 he wrote the Ecology test. For BirdSO, he wrote the Food Science test for for 2022. For SOAPS, he helped write the Ecology C test and the Forestry B test in 2024, and the Potions and Poisons test and the Ecology tests in 2025.

Youtube

More recently, he has started a YouTube channel called SciOly Stats, where he ranks nationally competitive teams, talks about relevant tournament outcomes, and makes predictions about certain tournaments. The channel was created on Jan 4, 2024. As of Feb 3rd, 2025 it has 121 subscribers, 6.5 K views, and 387 hours of watch time.
