Aka Jasmine. BlueVireo was a member of Stoller Dark Matter science olympiad team from Stoller Middle (an Oregon team) in the 2023-24 season. She is ok at Sci Oly (compared to other people on her team) and she has the 2nd most medals in the 2022-23 season (with WaveBuster as first).
For the 2024-25 season, BlueVireo is rejoining SciOly as a test writer for both the Rickards Invitational (PP/Fossils B) and BullSO (events TBD).
Hobbies
Outside of Science Olympiad, BlueVireo enjoys doing more science, violin, Science Bowl, drawing, writing, badminton, ping pong, and that's about it. (unless you count editing this user page as Science Olympiad)
She also enjoys poking random powders while telling her parents that she's actually doing CJAP
6th grade (2021-22)
BlueVireo got into Team B (3 teams total, Team A is the best team) and didn't do very well in the invitationals. But she got 1 gold and 3 bronzes in the Oregon Science Olympiad and beat Team A in ornithology!
7th grade (2022-23)
BlueVireo got into Team A! She did very well (although not as well as Sierra Vista or Kennedy or the schools that's better than Stoller) and got a medal in every invitational except GA Scrimmage (total around 15 invitationals). Actually BlueVireo didn't do as well in NatSO, her best event was RM with a tenth place finish. Her team got 25th overall...so maybe 10th place is ok (relatively ok).
Nationals Experience
Nats was fun, it was nice getting more people in BlueVireo's network and looking at the various trees/rocks/specimens in Kansas :)
The tests were hard-ish, depending on the event, but the overall experience was great. Since BlueVireo is from Oregon (west side) it was a different experience going to the East Side, since the trees, rocks, specimens, whatever are all different. Then BlueVireo can gain experience in both sides of the US. This is why BlueVireo hopes for more East-Side Nationals.
8th grade (2023-24)
So basically in Stoller there's this thing called preselection where people with specific medals would automatically get into Team A (it's not necessarily Darwin's survival of the fittest, but it doesn't matter). BlueVireo and her friend WaveBuster got in by preselection, and now they're studying for their events. Currently, BlueVireo is studying for Fossils, Forestry, and Can't Judge A Powder, and apparently in CJAP she got her first good partner. There have been some..unfortunate experiences in which she forgot to read the instructrions for testing powders in Dodgen-Walton Invitational...but overall BlueVireo can confidently say that for once she's not leading the event.
(BlueVireo's partner @WaveBuster has a different story---but don't trust that)
Nationals Experience
7th in CJAP and 8th in AgriSci---
Events!
Really just ordered from favorite to least favorite and ranting about experience. This is only my opinion on events and is not meant to target anybody or event.
Rocks and Minerals
At first BlueVireo thought RM was ok (3rd in state--6th grade) then in 7th grade she suddenly was very good at it and started to appreciate the complexity and simplicity of the event. (Does that make sense? BlueVireo hopes it does). Anyways she could have gotten at least a 6th place in Nationals 2023...if she hadn't marveled at the inhumanly captivating effects of calcite birefringence (she tested it on a piece of paper that says "STATION 8") and if her partner didn't spend 30 secs smelling sulfur.
Now that I think about it I really miss RM since Fossils is HARD
Ornithology
Ornith is a good event, BlueVireo did it in 6th grade but was sad when it disappeared in 2022-23. Forestry is ok, she got (a lot) more medals in forestry than ornith, but still ornith is better :)
Forestry
Honestly trees are just more boring than birds. They are not as pleasing to look at because they just sit there and don't do anything. Nats 2023 forestry was really bad (2.6 mins per station, INCLUDING MOVING AROUND TO THE NEXT STATION, 5-12 questions per station).
This year (2023-24) BlueVireo is doing Forestry again. Medaling (my definition of medaling is top 6) in every invitational so far. Partner not so good. Carrying entire event :)
Can't Judge A Powder
So far BlueVireo is judging powders pretty harshly (probably why she didn't read the instructions and ended up 23th place in DWSO) but other than that her scores have been unbelievably high since she didn't do it last year.
Solar System
Solar System was ok. Kind of forgot about it but my partner was horrible
Agricultural Science
AgSci was fun, except BlueVireo got 26th in Nats 2023. Probably because she didn't have enough time to prepare. Her partner was good and overly energetic and she's the type of person who would pat peoples' heads randomly
Sounds of Music
BlueVireo's partner was very bad and didn't do anything as well as the coach, so she had to carry the entire event by herself and got 39th in nats and 1st in state.
Storm the Castle
Honestly StC is like the most interesting event...like, you read the title Storm the Castle and be like, ooh, what is this about? Sadly, it's just trebuchets. BlueVireo got 2nd to last in state in 6th grade hehehe and decided to quit StC in 7th grade.

1: Chromebook won't connect to internet. I soloed the test
2: Graders didn't know what they were grading. Should have gotten a lot more points.
3: Probably because the binder wasn't even close to finished
4: No CJAP, only study events
5: Didn't read instructions and completely missed benedict's reagent
6: Partner went to India (ditched by partner)
7: Got ditched by partner because of some weird WA schedule (partner went to XPD). Funny how I got 2 pts total for the first 2 stations and I was 5 pts away from first place (and 2 pts away from second)
8: Don't know why, but partner rearranged the binder right before the event so we couldn't find anything
9: No CJAP and I didn't participate in the actual HDSO because I went to the BPA Regional Science Bowl (which turned out ok)
10: We failed on purpose because of some personal reasons
11: Hmm maybe I regressed after I came back from a 1+ month trip to China
12: We put random answers for no reason
13: yay
14: I was partially sick

Sriharsha (reading off the whiteboard): Literal equations! That's so hard! Never could have solved them!
Jasmine: So that means there's something called "fake equations"
Sriharsha: If the teacher asks them "what's the slope of this line" they would be stumped
Jasmine: They would say the slope is "up"
Viraj (from the cafeteria): Wait I didn't start my math homework yet...
Asking for CJAP materials at home
