Scarsdale High School (SHS) is a Division C school in the suburbs of New York City. Scarsdale High School competes in the Lower Hudson region of New York Science Olympiad, alongside other national-level invitational tournaments (Boyceville, Westlake, CMU, MIT).

History

The SHS Science Olympiad team started in 2008 by Mr. Williams and Ms. Wagner (JW^2), relying on their previous experience at Tuckahoe High School. Team members often came from the district's Division B team, Scarsdale Middle School. The team competes New York's Lower Hudson Valley regionals. The officer team consisted of two Captains from 2008 to 2015. In 2016, the team tried a system of three subject-specific officers with little success. Starting 2017, the officers consist of a President, two Captains, a secretary and a treasurer. The team's main funding comes from the Carnival, a once-a-year event where the team sells Fried Oreos and Zeppoles.

The 2015 and 2016 season regional were greatly affected by senior members dropping in the last minute. Additionally, 2016 saw the Time controversy, when a technical error put the team's It's About Time score from 1st place to 25th.

COVID greatly diminished the team's dedicated members. The team hit rock bottom during the 2020 season when due to a technological error with adobe, the regional test answers were reported to be tampered with and the majority of the scores were cancelled. However, the following year determined to bounce back, the leadership organized coaching event sub-groups (bio, building, physics) for incoming underclassman led by a specific officer. Team bonding events and pizza sales were arranged to further the community among the team members. That year the team attended various virtual invitational tournaments, which culminated to receiving first place at regionals. At the State competition the team received two medals: 3rd (Anatomy and Physiology) and 5th (Rocks and Minerals)

A rule was implemented for the 2022 season which prevented science research members from running for Captain or President of the club because of the states competition conflicting with WESEF (Westchester Science and Engineering Fair).

The Division B Scarsdale Middle School team placed 2nd place at states in 2021, allowing for experienced members to join the high school team for the 2022 season. The team saw great success at many national level invitational competitions such as receiving first place in both Belleville and Boyceville tournaments. However, during the regional competition, due to the trajectory getting disqualified and codebusters underperforming the team shifted down from first place to third place.

Technological Changes

The team created a facebook group during the 2011 season. The team created a study group and started test exchange during 2017, later upgraded to a team drive in 2018. The officer team also has an official email, at [email protected].

Starting in 2020 the team has switched to using Groupme and Google Classroom to post meeting announcements and documents.
