Glasgow Middle School is a Division B team that actively competes in Louisiana! We have been competing since 2013 and got we got second place in the 2018 state competition. However, in the following years, we secured first place each year. Our best year was the 2023 Wichita National Tournament, where we placed 31st overall in Division B.

Though we were not able to break the top half in the 2023 Wichita National Tournament, many of us Glaswegians know what we are doing and we will come back even stronger next year!

Many Glasgow Middle School Science Olympiad graduates feed Baton Rouge Magnet High School.

2023-2024 Season

Season Overview Though the season has not begun, our goal is the same as last year; to place in the top half of the national teams. There are plans to go to invitationals such as Texas A&M and BirdSO.

Competitions Through the Season

INVITATIONALS (Tentative)

Rickards
Rickards marked the start of our school's Science Olympiad season this year! We medaled in a large handful of events and allowed our new members to get a taste of Science Olympiad competing. Overall, we did great!

Dodgen-Walton
To have a relatively easier competition for a small portion of our new members, we signed a few teams up for Dodgen-Walton.

Boyceville
We competed at Boyceville instead of going to UT Austin.

Texas A&M
Just like last year, we hope to go to Texas A&M yet again for competitions.

LA Tech
To have two competing invitationals, we could be going to LA Tech instead of UT Austin!

BirdSO
Though BirdSO is a late and large invitational, it is a great chance for practise as well as just bringing up team morale before states and nationals!!

Invitational Rickards (S) Dodgen-Walton (S) Boyceville (S)
Place 44th (1122) NF TBD

2022-2023 Season

Season Overview This season, we were able to set a personal best! Nearly breaking the top half, we scored 31st out of 60 Division B teams. This was the first in-person Nationals since the 2019 Cornell National Competition. Though we sat through the entirety of the awards ceremony not hearing our names, it was surprising seeing many good placings.

INVITATIONALS

BullSO
The first invitational we attended this season! While 20th out of 27 teams may not seem like a great score, we believe that this was the start of a true Science Olympiad experience. We were able to see which events we felt like doing and how we wanted to prepare for it. Though preparation was rare prior to this, it soon lit the start of our strongest Science Olympiad year.

Boyceville
Boyceville placings may seem terrible if you look at the broad scale, but going in and nitpicking keeps the spirits high. We decided that we would go for medals and not overall placing, meaning that Boyceville and following invitationals had really high medal amounts from our teams! Boyceville had some of the highest medalling of our team, and it was a great experience!

Texas A&M
We originally planned to travel to the UT Austin Invitational. However, as time came, it was clear that we would not be able to make it. Instead, we went to TAMU. On a faithful late-January morning, we pooled together the Science Olympiad travellers and waited for the bus to arrive. Three buses, dozens of phone calls, and three classes missed, we finally loaded the bus and travelled to TAMU, arriving 8 hours behind schedule. We had multiple placings, and a not-so-terrible 12th place out of 19 teams. Our prime placing was from hterrapin, with a second place in Anatomy and Physiology!

BirdSO
BirdSO had some of the hardest tests that any of us had seen. These tests were both challenging and a learning moment for us, allowing for some serious knowledge-gaining and binder-building. We had multiple placings, and scored on our best team a 69th out of 164 teams, our best invitational percentage of the season.

STATES

The states experience was a great time. We scored 29 points, landing us directly onto the road to nationals. Though the tests were simple, it gave us a boost of confidence on what we knew, a great boost before nationals!

NATIONALS

As stated before, it was sad going through the awards ceremony not hearing our name called a single time. However, with the swap meet and the great banquet, the 2023 Nationals was a truly enjoyable experience. Yet again, I want to congratulate us, Glasgow Middle School, on setting a new personal Nationals record!

Other Notes

All invitational placings are just the top team, since we have teams for medals, not placings.

Lore (Joke Section)

I: Sour Patch Kid Craze

During a fateful Discord call one night, students a part of the 2022-2023 Glasgow Science Olympiad Team came up with the bright idea to wear sour patch kid costumes to the 2023 National Tournament.
However, not all was to go to plan.
As wearing costumes could be rather flashy, instead, with the help of :|hterrapin's art skills, each member got an individual sour patch kid sticker. See if you must, who had which sour patch.

II: Tangerine the Moth

We—specially gtj, who acted as a moth magnet for a good portion of the Nats trip—found a moth on the bus in Texas. We put the moth in a plastic container, named it Tangerine, and kept them with us for a little bit after releasing them next to a McDonalds. RIP Tangerine.
