Fleetwood Area High School is a Division C school located northeast of Reading, Pennsylvania, in the Central East Pennsylvania Regional. They regularly qualify for the state competition, and are fed by Fleetwood Area Middle School, which is another historically successful program.
History
Fleetwood is one of the longest-running programs in the Central East region, and also one of the most successful. They has placed in the top 10 in the state of Pennsylvania several times in their history, most recently in 2009. They also have multiple regional championships to their name, most recently in 2010. Fleetwood has tied with Northwestern Lehigh High School for the most Central East regional championships all-time in the C Division, with six.
Fleetwood has historically dominated the Berks County Tournament, winning all titles between 2008 and 2017.
2002
In 2002, Fleetwood nearly qualified for the 2002 National competition, after being part of the first, and so far only, three-way tie for second place at a Pennsylvania state tournament. Fleetwood, State College Area High School and Penncrest High School all finished with 221 points. However, State College won the gold medal tiebreaker by virtue of having five gold medals to Fleetwood's one and Penncrest's zero, and thus advanced to the national tournament for the sixth straight year. Nevertheless, Fleetwood's third-place finish was, and remains, their best performance at the state level.
Recent History
In the late 2010s, Fleetwood experienced a downturn of success at the regional level. In 2017, they failed to qualify for the state tournament for the first time in the 21st century, and subsequently fell out of the top 10 in the Central East region in 2018. However, in 2023 Fleetwood had a reversal of fortune, as several teams within the region turned down bids to attend states. As such, they were able to attend states for the first time in seven years.
