The Charlotte Regional (also known as Region 7 in previous years) is one of the largest regional tournaments in the state of North Carolina. The Governors’ Village STEM Academy hosted the regional for the first time for the 2025 season, having been previously been hosted by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and by the Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology.
History
Before 2023, North Carolina's regional tournaments were closed, meaning teams were assigned to regions geographically based on their county. Since 2023 all North Carolina regionals are open, so all teams in the state may compete in the tournament they choose. The Charlotte Regional served Mecklenburg, Union, Rowan, and Cabarrus counties when North Carolina's regional tournaments were closed.
In recent years, Charlotte has sent 6 teams from each division to the state tournament. In previous years, up to 8 C teams were offered bids to states. Charlotte is home to multiple Division B teams that have qualified for the national tournament, including Piedmont IB, Davidson IB, Jay M. Robinson Middle School, and J.M. Alexander. No Division C team from Charlotte has qualified for nationals to date.
