Welsh Valley Middle School competes in the southeastern region of Pennsylvania. They are among the more competitive schools in Pennsylvania's B Division, consistently placing within the top 10 at the state level. The team usually ranks top 5 in building events. Welsh Valley competes in 1-2 invitationals a year, such as the Rustin Invitational or the Eagle Invitational.

Team Info

The school is in the same school district (Lower Merion School District) as Bala Cynwyd Middle School, Harriton High School, Black Rock Middle School, and Lower Merion High School. The majority of students at Welsh Valley continue on to Harriton High School, while some continue onto Lower Merion High School. The current coaches are Christopher Lewis, Jeffrey Howarth, John V'Soske, and Matt Birch. Past coaches include Michael Sullivan, Katie Weber, and Marybeth Raidy.

Welsh Valley's Science Olympiad has an Instagram page devoted to their team, @wvms_scioly.

History

It is not known when Welsh Valley's program was founded. Their earliest known appearance at the state tournament came in 1996, after placing 7th at the Southeast regional.

Welsh Valley has made it to Nationals once, in 2001, where it placed 11th overall. 2001 is also the only time that WV has won a state tournament, and is the most recent time that WV won the regional tournament. The closest they have come to qualifying for nationals since then was in 2007, when they placed third, only 24 points behind Shady Side Academy Middle School.

In general, Welsh Valley builds its team exclusively with middle school students, and forgoes the allowed 5 ninth grade competitors, in order to give more students from the school the opportunity to participate in tournaments.
