Wyoming Area Middle School was a consistently successful team in the Northeast region of Pennsylvania. Other than 2012, in which they did not compete due to school budget issues, they qualified for every state tournament between 1993 and 2017. Their final year of competition was 2017.

Wyoming Area Middle School is part of the Wyoming Area Secondary Center. Their team fed into Wyoming Area High School.

History

1990s

Wyoming Area's middle school team was established in 1991. They qualified for states for the first time in 1993, their third year of competition, which began a long uninterrupted streak of qualifying for the state tournament.

1997 was Wyoming Area's best year in program history, as they won the regional championship for the first time. Of the first 17 Northeast regionals, this was the only year in which Stroudsburg Junior High School was defeated. Stroudsburg would return the favor at states, defeating Wyoming Area by only seven points to place 2nd and advance to nationals. Nonetheless, Wyoming Area's 3rd-place finish at the 1997 state tournament was the best performance in school history, and the closest they came to nationals qualification.

2000s

Wyoming Area's next regional title came in 2008, breaking another lengthy reign of regional dominance by Stroudsburg. They narrowly missed placement in the top 10 at states, being defeated by regional rival Greater Nanticoke Area Educational Center by only three points.

Although the team did not compete in 2012 due to district budgetary issues, they returned in 2013 and immediately resumed their consistent success at regionals. They won their final two regional championships in 2014 and 2015, and earned their final top-10 placement at states at the 2015 Pennsylvania State Tournament, where they placed ninth.

Legacy

Wyoming Area's B Division program was ended after the 2017 season. Their program remains one of the top B Division programs in Northeast regional history, only being surpassed by Stroudsburg, and were the only team to manage to defeat Stroudsburg at regionals during a period of dominance where Stroudsburg frequently qualified for nationals. Their 20 top-3 finishes at regionals are more than triple of any team other than Stroudsburg, and they have the most second-place finishes and the most third-place finishes in regional history for Division B. Their 3rd-place finish at states in 1997 was also the highest B Division placement for any team other than Stroudsburg until Harlan Rowe Middle School qualified for nationals in 2019.
