Churchill has a long history of success in Science Olympiad, placing in the top 2 at Regionals and [[California (North)|NorCals]] year in and year out. The program was started in the late 1980s and has racked up numerous nationals appearances. Several of those were in the late 80s and early 90s with coaches Dean Karagianes and/or Bob Wofford at the helm and more recently 7 times under head coach Jeff Jungk. Jungk is a science teacher at Churchill and has coached the team since 2004. He receives assistance and support from other staff members, parents and community members.

Winston Churchill Middle School is a public school in the San Juan Unified School District, located in the Sacramento area. It attracts many top students due to having the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, an academically rigorous program that aims to create a better world through education.
