sorry less user friendly for newbiesBrobo said Now tell me how Linux is less advanced? Linux is less "pretty", yes, but who needs all the fancy animations and buttons that Windows and Mac has? It is just as powerful if not more than Windows. It is much faster, has all the same features, and is open sourced. There are also many different branches for whatever you need: Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, etc. In some ways it's also more secure than windows. So tell me, how is Linux "less advanced"?

Re: Mac vs Windows?
I personally find each operating system(Linux (unbuntu and fedora and arch linux) windows OSX Chrome OS) to be similar and all are generally the same for me. However I fail to see the reasoning behind arguing about the perks of one operating system when that is the only one you have consistently used. It would be like you using the first car you ever got and never changing just because "that is what i like". I really think that you are only Qualified to argue the perks of an OS after you have used at least one competing OS for at least a couple of weeks or even better two competing OS's before making an opinion.

A simple google search brings up tons of ways that take less than 5 minutes so saying help is unavailable is a bit wrongThe point is that there were no help resources available that provided a solution. I might have been able to get help on some forum, but I didn't care enough about it to do that.

Re: Mac vs Windows?
I have had very little use with macs so I am not 100% qualified to argue about them but I have used both Windows and Linux enough to say that in my opinion Linux is superior to Windows. You may not have ever had a virus, but that is also due to your antivirus working in the background. Also just because you have never had any viruses doesn't mean anyone else can get viruses. You seem like a very smart user- you probably don't download a bunch of stuff left and right without really looking into what you are actually doing.
When I say "someone less computer minded may not like the change" what I mean is that those who aren't good with computers may feel confused and weary about changing. Even though it may actually be simpler, someone who doesn't understand this would only be scared by the new look. I can talk from experience, I know a few people who freak out when anything changes, even something as small as the look of a webpage or an odd error message that may mean nothing.

Re: Mac vs Windows?
Well, the only hands-on experience I have had with Macs was at an invitational in Protein Modeling. I had Ubuntu dual booting with WIndows a while back, but have since deleted it. I've tried using it again, but the newer 10.-- versions don't agree with my virtual machine.
The only types of computer users I have known are smarter people who are cautious online, people who have no clue about computers and only go to safe sites such as MSN, and people who purposely download viruses and malware onto computers. Then there are the people who are bursting with happiness because they just bought the internet on eBay for $10.

This was a year or two ago, and I don't remember exactly what I attemped to do to fix it, but it didn't work in the end. After that, Firefox refused to work, so I gave up on Ubuntu.robotman09 wrote:A simple google search brings up tons of ways that take less than 5 minutes so saying help is unavailable is a bit wrong

i am certain that PC when talking about windows stands for piece of.... not just personal computer since any computer owned by a person is personal and have u seen the mac ads and why is it that windows need so much spam protection and macs dont get them so dont even need to waste space on that...Squanto wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLbJ8YPHwXM

Macs are clearly the good guys, good guys are better and always triumph, case closed.
The only reason people like PCs is because they are cheap and they have more games. And they have more games because more people buy them (because they are cheap). But if people bought macs (the better operating system) then games would be made for macs as well.
i agree PCs work for games, but thats it... MACs are 100000000000000000x better for ALL other things... especially movie editing... 30 second ad in a class at school took 5 days of classes... 4 minute project at home took <30 minutes on my own personal mac
and as for price, u have 2 pay if u want quality (i now have 4 different mac laptops) my oldest is from like 1998 and works perfect, only flaw is it predates wireless internet but I can just use one of my others for that...

They might be better for video editing, but that is because they come with the software installed. You can easily get free video editing software online. Anything else, I'm sure that Windows is "100000000000000000x" better at than OSX. Anyways, your school is probably using ancient Windows XP.sciencegeek100 wrote:i agree PCs work for games, but thats it... Ahem
Mac is 1000x better than linux or windows. Windows needs all that spam and virus protection against hackers. On Mac, hackers have a VERY tough time making a virus

I have never gotten any malware on any of my computers as far as I can remember. What does spam have to do with operating systems anyway?drifter601 wrote:Mac is 1000x better than linux or windows. Also, it is just as easy to create a virus for OS X as any other operating system.

Re: Mac vs Windows?
Wrong. I've seen a couple articles where hackers can actually hack the Mac OS quicker than Windows. Macs are inherently no more secure. The reason there are very few viruses on Macs is they have such a low portion of the market share that nobody puts the time toward making them.drifter601 wrote:Ahem On Mac, hackers have a VERY tough time making a virus

Re: Mac vs Windows?
The only reason i would buy a mac would be for aesthetics...and even then i could pitch in 20 bucks MAX to make a windows laptop look nice anyway. And andrewskii hit the mark on the whole "Mac's are more secure" topic, Mac's give a false sense of security due to the way economics works. The Windows market is MUCH MUCH larger, giving hackers more of a reason to make viruses.
