Fawkes has competed in Science Olympiad since 6th grade in the 2016-2017 season, when he competed for the now defunct team from Decatur Classical Elementary. Since then, he has competed for the Whitney Young Academic Center team in 7th - 9th grade, and now competes for the Whitney Young High School team, all of which are located in Illinois. In each of his years competing, he has been fortunate enough to participate in the state tournament, although he has yet to win a state medal.

2016-2017 (6th grade)

Results

No data from this year could be collected.

Summary

This was my first year of scioly, and I have some vague memories of attempting to build something for Wright Stuff and utterly failing. However, I clearly remember that my team placed 6th at the CPS regional, meaning we advanced to the state tournament, and everybody was super excited about going on a coach bus. I think my events were Wind Power and Wright Stuff, and possibly another event that I can't remember.

2017-2018 (7th grade)

Results

No data from this year could be collected.

Summary

However, I know that I at least got a third place medal at the CPS regional tournament. Also, this year I was accepted to the Whitney Young Academic Center, which usually placed first or second at regionals. My events were Mystery Architecture, Battery Buggy and Rocks and Minerals. I was one of the worst people on the team and maybe got 2 or 3 medals all year, in part because I basically had no idea what I was doing. Especially in Battery Buggy. We don't talk about Battery Buggy.

2018-2019 (8th grade)

Results

Event Rockford Christian University of Chicago CPS Regionals Illinois States
Heredity 5th 1st 3rd 6th
Meteorology 3rd 3rd 2nd 6th
Mystery Architecture 32nd 21st 3rd 27th*
  • At Illinois states 2019, Mystery Architecture was improperly run, leading to its designation as a trial event

Summary

I improved a lot this year, in part due to having partners that I communicated with more as well as generally getting better and improving, taking more practice tests etc. I also learned that testing events were what I was best at so I stuck to that next year. This year was a lot of fun, despite me missing two states medal by one placing each (medals were 5th place and up), so I vowed to get a stated medal next year.

2019-2020 (9th grade)

Results

Event Rockford Christian University of Chicago Killdeer Countryside CPS Regionals Illinois States
Dynamic Planet 1st 2nd 3rd We'll thanks
Heredity 5th 5th 1st never to
Meteorology 5th 1st 2nd know covid

Summary

This year, since I was a 9th grader in Div B, I was doing the best that I ever had. I was getting plenty of medals, and my partners were really good as well. One cool memory I have is the Heredity writer for Killdeer finding me and my partner during the awards ceremony and congratulating us, because we did far better than he thought anyone would be able to. Unfortunately, our regional competition was canceled a few days before it happened because of Covid-19. I was really upset as I had hoped to medal at regionals and states. However, there's nothing I could do about it except to focus on next year; for the 2020-2021 season, I would compete in Div C.

2020-2021 (10th grade)

Results

Event Westlake University of Chicago Libertyville SOAPS River Hill CPS Regionals Illinois States
Designer Genes 16th 24th unreleased 20th 18th
Detector Building 34th 48th unreleased 49th 20th
Machines 2nd 20th 2nd 25th 34th 10th

Summary

This year was my first year in Div C, and all of it was in the miniSO format. However, it was cool to be able to go to competitions I never would have been able to other wise because they were out of state (Westlake, SOAPS, River Hill). I got carried in Machines.
