User:Moonwolf
Moonwolf, or Lauren, is an 8th grader currently attending Longfellow Middle School in Falls Church, Virginia, and will be attending TJHSST next fall. She has done Science Olympiad for 2 years, in the 21-22 season and 22-23 season, both competing for Longfellow. In the 21-22 season, she did Crime Busters, Green Generation, and Solar System, and in the 22-23 season, she did Crime Busters, Green Gen, Forestry, and Road Scholar. Her favorite event used to be Crime (during the 21-22 season), then it changed to Forestry, but after a very interesting Nats experience she now loves (mhm def) all of her events equally. She loves Science Olympiad very much, considering having fun with her team and attending competitions to be the highlight of her (otherwise sadge) middle school years.
Outside of Science Olympiad, Moonwolf enjoys playing (squeaking) her clarinet, listening to music, reading books, and touching grass.

Seasonsss
21-22 (Sevie Year) !!!
During this season, Moonwolf was an inexperienced sevie who didn't know much about Scioly. She got dragged by her parents to the interest meeting, where she quickly fell in love and was determined to get in (partly because i didn't want to do mathcounts). Long story short, she did (to my surprise)!!!! She originally wanted Crime, Code, Disease, or Dynamic Planet as events, and only ranked Green Gen high because her friend wanted to do it, but she ended up getting it (and my friend didn't oop). She enjoyed her very nice events: Crime, Green, and Solar. (sevie Moonwolf doesn't realize how lucky she is to get these events and not painful builds.)
Her best and favorite event, by far, was Crime, mostly because she had a cracked partner. She spent most of her time grinding Solar System (which she wasn't great at) and neglecting Green Gen slightly. Even with questionable results and work ethic, she ended up making the States team without changing events, and later, the Nats team. She didn't care much about results and fully enjoyed the States and Nats experiences. This year was a great start to her Scioly journey, and she's super grateful that she found Science Olympiad and didn't have to do Mathcounts! She loved the 21-22 team and her amazing partners very much :) Longfellow Ignis ftwww but Aeris is a slay too <3
22-23 (8th Grade) !!!
A super nice year! Moonwolf loved her new partners and team. She didn't like the team names as much though (it should be argentum not argenti smh). Originally, she only did Scioly this year to "redeem" herself and place at Crime for Nats, which obviously didn't happen, but she wasn't counting on it anyways. (it was a stupid reason, and i found much better reasons to continue!) As a veteran, she was placed into four events--two of them were brand new to her. One of those two became her favorite and the other one became her least favorite! (you win some you lose some ig. i think i still got lucky with my events.)
Following some interesting events, she was offered to switch from Road to Solar System, but she declined because she didn't want to do Solar System again. She doesn't regret it. Her best event also changed from Crime to Green Gen, having a super strong start in the latter and a really questionable start in the former, but things balanced out slightly toward the end.
This year was quite hectic, but still super fun. There was much more stuff to stress about, especially during Jan-March when she had a HS entrance test, 4 invites in 2 WEEKS, and very goofy grades. However, she loved the hybrid and in-person competitions like LB, Regionals, States, and Nats, and had fun hanging out with her team and (attempting to) socialize with other people.
Her biggest regret this year is not doing any trial events. She's always wanted to do trial events. But she always forgets to sign up to do them. Or there's a conflict.

events <3
in order of least fave to fave
road scholar
She strongly disliked Road Scholar throughout the 22-23 season (and considered switching when she was offered the option), as she despised measuring things on her computer screen with her ruler she didn't realize was divided into 16ths, not 10ths (how did i survive). However, she stuck with it, and her placement at Nats made it all worth it in the end :) She strongly prefers in-person road tests like the one at Nats to online ones, as she enjoys drawing PLSS sections and actually being able to see the road maps. She wishes she had grinded Road a little more towards the beginning of the year--at the first invitational, she did like two questions and her partner did like eighty. She's super grateful for her partner during the regular season and her States/Nats partner (jimmy the nerd) for hard carrying the event, and the only things she learned from Road are: 1. She can't follow directions, and 2. She can't give directions.
solar system
ah, the good old days. Her favorite memories came from grinding this event--cramming at 1 am before Regionals, panicking because of BirdSO Mini, forcing her partner to do physics sections on practice tests, and watching the Olympics with the other SS sevie instead of studying were some of the many highlights that came with this event. She loved the Solar System team very dearly. Despite this, however, she had some slightly irritating experiences with this event. The reason it's ranked lower is because of very questionable tests. She enjoyed studying and taking notes, but not the test-taking part. Many of the Solar System tests she took were completely off the rules and sometimes just plain random, which she didn't enjoy. Actually, scratch that--she loved taking those completely random tests and putting stupid answers as a joke, but the results she got on those tests were not very enjoyable. (i put "no idea, testmaker please read and follow the rules" as a joke answer to a random trivia question about Callisto and i swear i deleted it BUT IT DIDN'T DELETE)
green gen
Good event, but the 21-22 tests she took were a little odd at times--both the questions and her answers were quite interesting. Moonwolf thinks that the topics to study are too broad, and the stuff on tests is sometimes incredibly random, but she enjoyed studying for this event, as there's not a lot of math that her small brain can't handle. She prefers the water and air topic over land. She is very proud of her Green Generation cheatsheet, despite the fact that she literally can't find anything on there. She doesn't enjoy how half of the tests she took last year had many spelling errors and how the tests this year asked about random statistics no one knew about. Nevertheless, this was her best event in 8th grade, even though she didn't really study for it (i basically relied on luck + the fact that i try to do green gen related topics for every project in school--even in civics :O)
crime busters
Though she initially really enjoyed crime, she started to grow annoyed by it, particularly the days leading up to Nats and during Nats. She didn't enjoy doing chromatography, having messed it up at States because they put the dot too low. She is also very very bad at mixtures for some reason and can never ID salt and sugar. Her magical cheatsheet carried her through dry labs. However, she really liked Crime Busters meetings and has a lot of great memories from both years she did Crime. Some infamous quotes from the crime team include: "IT FIZZES!!" "we should commit ar**n" (this is a joke) "the test contains dead sheep hair" "wait gypsum doesn't blacken iodine?" "cream boosters" "cake beaters" "magic jello" (referring to gelatin + gatorade mixture) "crunchy sand asmr" *insert demonic sand stirring noises* "tasty celery nylon" "yummy blood stain" "mmmmmm platelets blood cookies" "yknow the tweezers arent flammable right" "if you throw up in my car i will come after you" "it all downhill form here" "hyperactive emotionally motivated pineapples" "pog u have urself a chromatograph sheeesh" etc.
fourizztree?
W event L binder.
She hates binder events. She hates printing binders. She hates 100-page documents that take forever to load. But Forestry will always have a special place in her heart <3
competitions
21-22 szn
States
Moonwolf's first in-person competition! She really enjoyed the UVA campus. Everything went smoothly, apart from the day before, when she ate too much cheese at the team buffet and died.
Nationals
She wished Nationals was in-person and would have loved to go to California for the first time. It was still very fun though, and she loved all the swag Caltech sent! The tests were very high quality--she remembered an OK-difficulty Crime test, slightly easier Green Gen test with weird chemistry, and a lDSKJFLSKDJFLKJ Solar System test (it was very hard i guessed on every question while my partner attempted to do the challenge problem). She really enjoyed the competition, even though it was virtual. The award ceremony party was also very fun, and she's very proud of her school getting top 5 for the first time.
22-23 szn
Lake Braddock
She enjoyed this tourney a lot! Lake Braddock is a very cool school, and she met with her friend that goes there :) The tests were pretty nice as well, but she messed up the chromatography and implication for Crime, as usual.
Regionals (TJ)
The hybrid format was very interesting. She doesn't remember the Forestry test very well, but she remembers a pretty decent Road test and a long-ish Green Gen test (i wasn't expecting it to be long). Crime was in-person, and she messed up the "who did it?" question because of her small brain. However, she managed to place 1st in all of her events, which she definitely wasn't expecting.
States
States was even more fun than last year! The team stayed in one hotel together, which was very chaotic but fun. Everything went smoothly for the most part. She had three consecutive blocks and was super stressed when the first one ran late, but thankfully, all of the other ones started late too. The tests were quite difficult (but high quality), and she didn't expect to place as well as she did.
Nationals
Her favorite memory of the year was probably the whole in-person Nats experience. It was just... amazing. The campus was super cool, and Moonwolf loved the art. Walking around the campus never got boring. The dorm she stayed in was also super nice, and the dining hall's food was very yummy. She also enjoyed talking to some people from different teams and getting a bunch of stickers from the swap meet! She averaged 3-4 hours of sleep, but it was completely worth it. She kind of wishes she talked to more people though.
The tests... were... something. Two of the tests she took (Road and Forestry) were super high quality and just the right difficulty for a Nats test, but the other two were either super easy or super weird. The Crime test had A LOT of mixtures, but no plastics, and the chromatography format was very odd. She thinks the States test was harder. The Green Gen test was 50 questions, all open-ended, testing on very fundamental concepts. She didn't enjoy writing so much and believes the Regionals and States tests were in a better format. Moonwolf believes the cause of her low placement in Green Gen was that she might have messed up all the math questions and didn't explain concepts very well.
Although she loves Scioly very dearly and has had a lot of fun, she will probably not do Div C next year (unlesssss... ;o)
