Spackenkill High School is a small school with an enrollment of about 400 students located in New York. Despite their relatively small student body, Spackenkill has placed four times at State level and attended Nationals twice in its nineteen-year history.
Spackenkill's Science Olympiad program is fairly large for such a small school, normally consisting of 30 or more students, meaning nearly 7% of the school participate in the program. Due to the large number of students Spackenkill will normally send 3 teams to the Regional tournament.
Major Struggles
Spakckenkill typically elects 5 officers to make decisions about teams and what invitationals will be attended. Before 2018 Spackenkill High School had advisors that spent time building for and teaching students. However after a change in leadership the new advisors were less experienced, moreover they wanted to ensure that students built all build events themselves, leading to lower performance. Spackenkill also suffered from a negative feedback loop, where lower performance led to less input from advisors leading to even worse performance. Spackenkill additionally suffers from a lack of invitationals, many other schools in the region attend ~7 invitationals each year, while Spackenkill rarely attends more than 3. This leads to less practice and lower performance. Additionally, a lot of Spackenkill Science Olympiad's members participate in other extracurriculars alongside Science Olympiad such as Math Team or Varsity Soccer. These activities often require the same or more commitment than that of Science Olympiad, leaving its members with a mountain of work alongside studying for Science Olympiad events. Spackenkill has a deep understanding of these issues and is working to help rectify them further in the hope of further improving performance.
Results History
Spackenkill High School consistently wins its regional tournament as well as regularly placing at the low-mid level at its state tournament.
Spackenkill also attends 2-4 invitationals each year, and its performance varies.
