Park Forest Middle School is the home of a Pennsylvania Division B Science Olympiad team in the State College School District. They currently compete in the Northwest region of Pennsylvania, although they have competed in the Central East region, Central region, and Northeast region in their history.
School Info
Park Forest has a rivalry with Mount Nittany Middle School, since both schools are located in State College. They both feed into State College Area High School. They are also the two schools that resulted from the split of State College Junior High School, which was a nationally-prominent team that won two national titles. Park Forest occupies the same school building as the old State College Junior High.
History
After State College Junior High School's team disbanded, Park Forest took over as the top team in the Central regional, winning the regional tournament in their first three years competing as Park Forest. However, they were unable to qualify for nationals, as they only reached 5th place in 2001 and 2002.
In 2003, they missed the state tournament for the first time. This would prove to be a rarity, though, as they consistently qualified for states through the rest of the 2000s and 2010s. During this time, they moved around to different regional tournaments frequently, owing to the lack of tournaments located close to them. To date, Park Forest has competed in every regional except for the Southeast and Southwest regionals.
Park Forest had a period of success during the 2010s, consistently placing in the top 10 in the state, including a school-best 4th place at the 2012 Pennsylvania State Tournament. Park Forest finished in 7th place at the state tournament every from 2014 to 2017, colloquially referred to as "the S7reak".
