Event Names

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

Event Names

Post by asquaredplusb »

I've seen previous posts about this, but I just wanted to ask for an update.

Are there any plans to change some of the event names for the next season? (2013 - 2014) The fact that some of the events are named Disease Detectives or Dynamic Planet, even at the high school level, almost seems to slightly delegitimize those events. Even the name Designer Genes has led to some confusion.

In my opinion, changing some of the names may make SciOly feel more official/professional to more people, and would look better for recruiting or college purposes.

Thanks!

I actually don't think this is necessary. I think the witty categories are appealing just as much as the simple ones like Heredity, Water Quality, Forestry, etc. I don't know if they're going to, but I don't support it. My opinion isn't strongly against it, though.

I was actually expecting "Designer Genes" to refer to B and "Heredity" to refer to C, so I was surprised that it was the other way around. I think one of the chalkers had a post about this, so ima find it.

EDIT: Found two discussions.

Chalker7's post in one of the discussions
More recent discussion that Luo brought up because of Designer Genes (I must have missed this)

And that boggles my mind why it's backwards...

I do not see what could possibly be 'kiddish' about DP. The name fits the event well enough.

Anyways, I prefer the fun names; I mean, be real here, folks. SO is highly competitive in some areas and at higher levels of competition, but doing SO does not make you some premier scientist. Nobody is above 'Crime Busters' :) . I mean, doesn't everyone want to be a crime buster? And someone did have the sense not to call Forensics that, so I may be in the minority. And 'Don't Bug Me' beats 'Entomology' any day! 'Ornithology'? See, the thing that bothers me is they're inconsistent. Do they use the fun, cutesy names or not? Why does Division C have, as said, Designer Genes and not Shock Value or Keep the Heat as opposed to Circuit Lab and Thermodynamics? Why does B have 'Forestry' instead of something easier on the ears? I don't know.

...that all came out pretty scattered. Sorry, I'm tired...long competition day.

I actually don't know. Div. B should probably get the punny names.
But still. Those events are harder, aren't they? Maybe it's more of a content thing than a name thing. I don't know. :derp: All of my events' names were pretty straightforward, except maybe Compute This. I know that Heredity is different from Designer Genes, and although the name totally makes sense and is witty, the latter may be on a Div. C level. No one's going to give the lower level a harder event just because of the name.
Then again, I might be wrong, and the level of difficulty might be the same.

My point being; I think that the names should be on the bottom of the priority list if thinking about switching two similar events from division to division. There's also no need to change any names; none are really that stupid, and we've gotten used to most of them.

I agree, and since I've been doing SO for a few years I've started liking the names.

The thing is, during recruitment this year, we had a few people walk away after they saw the names Dynamic Planet and Disease Detectives, which we happened to have at the top of our list. And these were very smart people that we could have benefited from - however, they were also people that wouldn't have taken the names seriously.

That's a bad alternative.

I don't know why anyone would "walk away" based on event names. That's not fair at all. If these people see how hard students work for these seemingly childish events, it's no joke, and they shouldn't be leaving because of some names.
