Bird Discussion

Post by PacificGoldenPlover »

Considering the large number of users who include birds in their username, I am starting a discussion for birds/ornithology and the like, since the ornithology event is gone. Feel free to post anything you like about birds.

My username I actually got because that was the most recent life bird (e.g. a bird I have seen for the first time ever).
My favorite plover is probably a Lesser-sand Plover. The first record of it in my county came this June, and I got to get a quick peek at it. Here's a photo from the internet.

But my avatar, in case anyone was wondering, is not a Pacific Golden Plover, it is Black Turnstone, which I photographed at the beach.

I was referencing your user name not your avatar, (for the sake of making sure i don't look like someone who doesn't know the difference between the 2 birds)

When I was standing at my bus stop this morning, overhead the sky suddenly went dark as a whole blizzard of chevron after chevron of Canada Geese flew by. Immediately, I said. "The Canadians are coming! The Canadians are coming!" (The girl at my stop thinks I'm a freak btw) But, It's sad to see them fly south for the winter. Dear birds, you will be missed... Enjoy your warm-weather getaway!

Well, migration is about the best time for birdwatching in Southern California... I went for a trip to a nearby hotspot last weekend, and there were no less than fifteen other birders present!!! Almost as many birders as there were birds.

Awesome! I've been dying to go to the NY Botanical Garden in the Bronx on a Sat. Morning! They have a bird walk every Saturday! The SO team went on a trip there at the end of last June for fun, but we never really got to go birding. I've heard they get a big turnout every week! A whole herd of bird nerds come just to observe the birds! I hear they get a big variety of species passing through each week, too!

I recently had a pair of ospreys take up residence at the bay near my house. I haven't seen my red-tails since then-do they scare each other away?

Probably not, since Ospreys eat fish and Red-tails eat small rodents. Recently, there was a high-profile nesting of Ospreys in my county, something like the fifth nesting recorded since the early 1900's. But there are still red-tails, White-tailed Kites, and Vultures.
