I think It's About Time we got this marathon started

We currently use the Gregorian calendar, but, prior to its introduction, much of the (Western) world used the Julian calendar. What problem with the Julian calendar did Pope Gregory, whom the Gregorian calendar is named after, seek to fix?

The Julian calendar overestimated how long it took for the earth to orbit around the sun. The Julian calendar added the leap year making one year 365.25 days. However, it was discovered that it actually took 365.242 days for the earth to orbit around the sun. By the time this was figured out, we were already ten days out of where we should be. So, Pope Gregory skipped ahead ten days in the calendar and changed it a little bit. There was still a leap year every four years. However, every centennial (00) there is not a leap year but every 400 years (ex: 2000) there is a leap year.

a) How do you know whether a year is a leap year or not?
b) Use your answer to the previous question to list the next 3 leap years.

a) Almost all years that are a multiple of four are leap years. However, centennials that are not multiples of 400 are not leap years. In other words, we have a leap years every four years except for every hundred years when we don’t have one except for every 400 years when we do have one.
