Post by transcontinental »

Hello!

Transcontinental Science Olympiad is a practice invitational being held from November 21-22.

Our main goal is to create opportunity for schools to collaborate and practice without the pressure of having to place. For more information check out the website: https://transc.wixsite.com/invitationals

Please reach out to us on this forum or at transcontinentalscioly@gmail.com if you have any questions/concerns.

We look forward to practicing with you!

Hi! Does this mean that there will be no medals? Is this is a community colloborative style invitational?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Belle!

Apologies for the late response.

Yes, this is more of a community collaborative invitational. However, we are planning on offering placements so that teams know where they stand. It won't mean anything though, the main incentive is practice!

Hi, thanks again for running a great practice invitational! Its really impressive how yall ran a comp with a huge scope at 80 teams all while being still in high school!

Event Reviews:
Anatomy: 14th place
Solid test, solid questions, although it felt a bit short! Would've preferred some more physiology, and I felt like there really wasn't much room for error, so score distributions may have been an issue.
9/10

Designer Genes: 14th place
The test felt way too short, numerous questions were graded wrong, and a couple questions were incomplete. wheres muh math bro. Not a great test.
5/10

Fossils: 3rd place
The test had a nice length, I felt pressured, and was fairly enjoyable with a good amount of general earth science knowledge. However, the lack of id that would be assumed to make a nice majority of the test for a id event was interesting!
9/10

Ornithology: 4th place
Bruh. Pulling pictures off the front page of Cornell lab, and still identifying them wrong really isn't a good look! (cough mourning dove/common ground dove issue). Test was also way too short, soloing the test in 30 minutes, had almost no anatomy, no pathology, and no conservation/general bird info. Quite disappointing!

2/10

Protein Modeling: 12th place
During this event, we experienced a server glitch issue in which all of our answers got wiped. However, one of our members was able to go back in and complete the test, with a final score of 27/35. Thus, if a single person could finish the entire test within the 50 minute timer, although he didn't score very well, the length of the test certainly should be modified next time!
3/10

Overall:
Once again, great competition, but hoped for better quality tests. Maybe try getting qualified alumni next time, especially for a comp in which so many teams are going to attend. Thanks!

This is a general question but what caused the final scores to change quite a bit compared to the preliminary scores? I saw some rankings for events go up significantly while others went down.
2019:Fermi Questions, Protein Modeling, Sounds of Music
2020: Designer Genes, Protein Modeling, Ping Pong Parachute
2021: Chem Lab, Experimental Design, Protein Modeling

There was a glitch that caused short answer questions to not be scored. I would assume that ranks changed due to the addition of the scores from these short answer questions.
