RIP Picture Gallery

Post by MoMoney$$$;)0) »

Picture Gallery is now a thing of the past. What are your feelings on that, considering the helpfulness in showing past builds, which is especially helpful for newbies?

Personally, I feel like this forum's software seems a bit dated, and perhaps not as aesthetically appealing to some peope as bigger, more well known forums, such as Quora (sorry, not trying to be ungrateful, scioly.org is great! Just trying to give an honest opinion tho). From what I know, the forums, gallery, and wiki software are mashed together on one platform since the software is from different companies/organizations - this makes organization and ease of use a bit more difficult. All these reasons and more may contribute to why people don't use the Image Gallery anymore. I know this wouldn't be an easy problem to solve, but I think site usage and usefulness would definitely increase if the aesthetics and functions were simplified and reformed.

As for showing past builds, I agree that the Image Gallery is super helpful for giving people new ideas and stuff. However, I do believe that protectiveness and secrecy of ones' own ideas has only increased in recent times as tournaments become more and more competitive - teams may not be willing to share things they have created in order to maintain their dominance on the totem pole.

Bold of you to assume that the staff is not working to update and restore the Image Gallery.

The image gallery is not "dead" and we are working on an improved system. Stay tuned.

It's hard to offend us as we understand your opinions come from wanting the best experience on this site, and we work to try to promote that by seriously considering all suggestions that come our way.

Many of the open-source packages we use are selected over other options for their ease of implementation and long term support. Both phpBB3 for the Forums and MediaWiki for the Wiki have been supported for close to 20 years (which is still younger than Scioly.org!) and this support includes user experience and security upgrades that we do not need to write ourselves. While custom builds for our site may fit our users' needs better, they would be entirely self-maintained which would likely mean longer downtimes for software updates to allow for bug fixes and security patches, etc. We want to maximize site uptime while offering a useful experience and that sometimes means some compromises are made.
