Staying Motivated

Post by Birdmusic »

Sometimes, it feels like people (including me) are pretty motivated up to Regionals, and then not as motivated up to States. There are no major academic things happening the month before/after States.

Is there any way to keep everyone motivated all the way up to States?

It's just that most people feel as if making it to states is a really good achievement (it is), and they feel as if they have no hope of making it past state's as usually one school dominates over the others.

I think a good motivation is to have more practices so that everyone can be together and working on their events. Sometimes, it feels like just being around my friends and teammates makes it more fun to study. Another good motivation is to bring food to practices. It sounds kinda stupid, but it works really well. Otherwise, the rest of my motivation to work on my events came from the pressure to do well, but there isn't anything you can really do to influence that.

The trick is: be unmotivated until states, realize you don't know anything about your event, and cram every day for (in HI's case) that 2 month period. Of course, in a competitive state like CA, you might need to stay motivated the entire way. To do that, think about something related to nationals and use that as your motivation. The thing that pushed me for the entirety of last year was New York in itself.
