Coaching Tips

Post by NSCDS3RdCaptain »

Hello all,
I am a SciO alumnus who is going to become an assistant coach for a school and coach Density Lab and Water Quality. Do you have any tips for how to make practices a mix of fun and work and still have the team medal consistently?
Thank you so much in advance,

As someone who does both water Q and density, I would say that you have to find kids that actually care about those events. The only way to consistently do well and keep things fun is if you genuinely want to do the event.

Also, make sure the student actually likes what he/she is doing. If they don't like the event, there's no way that they will do well in it.

I agree with this. Both of those events can be really boring if you don't like them. As for making practice fun, don't make them take tests all the time. Play fun games that still require them to have knowledge of the event. You could make a jeopardy for the event. Or, if you're going to make them tests, put jokes on the tests

If your school has a open informational meeting about all the events/signup day like Ladue does, make sure to appeal to as many people as possible, while also making sure few will drop out. Two years ago in Rocks, 4 people showed up to the first meeting, and 3 last year for fossils...hence the reason i got last and 3rd in tryouts XDIf your school has tryouts and a kickoff meeting like ours...don't make the same mistake.
