Updated rules hype
get ready for a Building/Shooting game based on the food chain at Nats
Also, they didn't add the previous nationals game theme (Enzymes) to the rules under "examples which you shouldn't use"

Re: Game On C
I was really surprised by the addition of the game type
My partner and I have pretty much only done collection games because that's the only thing we can really complete in 50 minutes, and now I'm thinking about how you have to think of how to incorporate the theme into the game type while also including scientific principles...
Also, what is the "building" theme? Would that be like clicking and dragging to assemble parts of something?

Just trying my best...
Re: Game On C
I envision "building" to be a game where you have to get an object from point A to point B on the screen by building a pathway with a certain arsenal of parts. Control scheme is up to you; clicking and dragging sounds pretty good, though. I'm just wondering how I'm gonna make a racing game work with the small playing field and limited control options that Scratch gives you.

Re: Game On C
I have to commend the Nature & Inquiry committee for the changes, as, if we have to suffer through another year of this, at least, make it less rote! As-was, anybody who put in 25hr of practice two years ago could still perform well this season. Not any more...
I'm kind of stuck on the building genre, too. Tetris? Minecraft and Mario Maker are too open to be something produced in a time constraint...
The combination for Nationals is open to all sorts of amusing possibilities. For example, in 50min, make me a racing-shooter on the topic of combustion reactions. If not impossible, it'd certainly be terrible.

Re: Game On C
In terms of the new rules, I definitely think it's a step in the right direction, but I wish they had done more with it. My partner and I won our regionals last year with a turn-based RPG about cellular biology. I would love it if they had more game genres available, such as platformers, RPGs, or fighting games.

Re: Game On C
I like the change. I imagine that a lot of competitors knew how to make exactly one game and would just change the art to incorporate the theme for each competition. This forces people to know how to make several games and have to adapt to whatever they get at a tournament.
I'm just not sure what all of the terminology means. Is "collection" a catch-all term for any game where you have to collect things? Can that be a platformer where you jump around and collect orbs on different platforms? Does it have to be a game where stuff falls from the sky and you catch it before it hits the ground? I wonder how strict the definitions are, or what they really.

Re: Game On C
I would assume that's the case, but it'd probably vary depending on the grader and you should send in a rules clarification about thatgneissisnice wrote:I like the change.
