In Air Trajectory, I've seen teams get tiered for their release mechanism (string) contributing to their falling mass, and there was an FAQ (by email) saying the top part of the bottle won't be counted in the falling mass because it was considered negligible. Your best bet would be to submit an FAQ.

For the notebook, that would violate 2h.

Seeing how you're from NJ, and based on your question, I'm assuming you didn't do scrambler last year? I'll tell you that last year, the E/S did not treat the string as having mass (it was negligible). I talked to him at regions and he didn't seem to diverge from his interpretation last year.

Say, what school are you from anyways?

If the string and/or rubber band touch the floor after the launch does it result in a construction violation? The string is still looped over the top pulley of the ELV so does that constitute "not falling from the scrambler". The 2 k weight does not touch the floor.

By "scrambler" I think it refers to both the Egg Transport Vehicle (ETV) and the launcher. That would mean string shouldn't touch the floor.

The string should not count as the falling mass, unless you are using like a metal chain for your string!

Just to be safe just tape it down or something. Depending on the person, some supervisors like to get nitpicky.

Hi everyone! This is our team's first year and my partner and I are having trouble visualizing/building our design. I have two questions: how do you get the string to detach from the scrambler when it leaves the launcher if you're using a pulley launch system? And how do you get the wingnut to spin freely of the rod using a wingnut braking system? I'm not familiar with that kind of system at all and I don't understand how it is built. Thank you!

At one time we just used a small loop on the end of the "pull" string. The loop would just detach itself once the car cleared the front of the launcher (at about the same time the weighted mass hits the floor.) We had a small raised pin in the back of the scrambler car and that is where we attached the string. This setup works because the string is always taut right up to the point that the back of car goes clears the front of the launcher.

Bonus Interpretation

I'm curious how others are interpreting the bonus for 2015. We interpreted the bonus to be passing between the can and the track boundary (to the left of the can as you look down the track from the launch end of the track). This requires the car to follow a curved path. The people running the event at our regional competition interpreted it as "passing the can to the car's left," or simply, not hitting the can while going in a straight line.

I don't understand how a bonus could be simply not hitting a can that is offset to one side of the track. But, the specs are ambiguous in their wording. They state, "…the entire ETV successfully passes the can on its left…" So, does "its" refer to the can or to the car? How do you interpret that?
