Re: Scrambler Rules
I used plastic easter eggs for my testing. They were shaped exactly like the real things, and I filled them with seed to match the weight of a real egg.
The only things they are bad for is if you wish to test for how fast you can go and collide with the wall before it cracks.
Also, captbilly, mind sharing the type of scrambler launcher that you used?

Re: Scrambler Rules
eggs weigh about 60 grams right? thats what i got but my scale is crap. Also i shouldn't have a problem with colliding with the wall to see if it will break or not since if you hit the wall during competition you get a run penalty.

Re: Scrambler Rules
i agree with not being able to touch the wall because the point is to stop before the wall, also some eggs may be stronger or weaker than others, and the rule eliminates that factor altogether

Re: Scrambler Rules
Just a few tips from someone who did Scrambler a couple years ago.
A pulley launcher works best. Falling weight pulls a string, which, through pulleys, pulls the car forward, releasing it at speed once it leaves the launcher.
The secret to our success was a twisted hook (my partners idea), which pulled the car forward an remained attached, but when pulled upward(as it leaves the launcher) slips off the car. Ball bearings would've been nice (we've had them on our electric vehicle for the past couple years), but we used vinyl washers greased with petroleum jelly to minimize friction. The chassis of the vehicle was constructed of PVC pipe, and the launcher was made out of 2x4s (though it ended up weighing 60lbs, and was a pain in the...butt
... to carry around).
Here's a video of our last run (best) run.

is this event hardstarpug wrote:Even though I don't do this event my enterpretation is that they want to stress making sure your device goes in a straight line. They also want to discourage people from try to make a car that goes really slow then just rolls up and taps the wall and stops.
Re: Scrambler Rules
i didnt think it was hard when i did it as sophomore(before it was moved to class B), but i am pretty good at engineering things. this is not to say that i didnt have my share of set-backs. the key is to have fun with it and if you do, it wont matter how difficult it is because you'll like it.
when the fear of crashing is greater than the thrill of speed,BRAKE!
Scramber Ideas
This year, I am new to Science Olympiad. I have not recieved any official rules for this year's season for the Scrambler event. so, I was wondering what you would say about my idea for the Scrambler.
There is a box with an open top and a whole in the back. A round 1kg weight is dropped into a descending semi tube which goes down into the box. The weight bumps against the front wall of the vehicle, and then goes back under the tube which didn't go to the floor of the vehicle. The 1kg ball bumps a weight outside of the hole in the back. Attached to it is a string, which is attached to the box. The weight is heavy enough to slow, and eventually stops it however long a distance from the wall the egg would go into. An adapted version would have the string attached to either the front or rear axle.
I had a picture of my idea, but apparently, I can't find it.

Re: Scrambler Rules
I know it would help, but I don't really know if I'm signed up for Scrambler officially.
