Scrambler B
This year the distance from the scrambler to the wall will be measured from the center of the wall. Last year it was measured in a straight line from the scrambler to the wall. What are your thoughts on the rule change for this year? I personally dont like it. Also, another change for this year is that the egg cant touch the wall AT ALL or you will be issued a run penalty. I dont like this new rule either
Thoughts?

Re: Scrambler Rules
As I write this the rules are undergoing final proofing and are scheduled to go to the printer next week. Any corrections/edits must be in by Monday, making additional changes extremely unlikely. The up side is; hopefully, you will get the rules much earlier than in previous years.
At this juncture, discussion of whether someone likes or dislikes the rules is irrelevant. A more fruitful discussion might be how these changes will affect your design/strategy.
P.S. It will be a LONG weekend!

Re: Scrambler Rules
Even though I don't do this event my enterpretation is that they want to stress making sure your device goes in a straight line. They also want to discourage people from try to make a car that goes really slow then just rolls up and taps the wall and stops.

Re: Scrambler Rules
hmm i guess i'm going to have to find a way to get my car to go in a very straight line. When it stops it tends to turn to the right for some reason

Re: Scrambler Rules
More advice from the inexperienced guy is most likely your brake isn't applying equal pressure on the ground so it turns when it stops. ![Geek :ugeek:](./images/smilies/icon_e_ugeek.gif)

What brakes are you using and/or considering?Pleiades wrote:hmm i guess i'm going to have to find a way to get my car to go in a very straight line. When it stops it tends to turn to the right for some reason
Re: Scrambler Rules
We had this problem with our scrambler a couple years ago and our Electric vehicle last year. By putting the brake (where the wingnut stops) on one side of the car, it stops that wheel sooner, because their is some flex in the axle. This year we are putting our brake in the middle of the car to fix that problem. Back on topic, I agree that It should go in a straight line, but I think you should be able to tap the wall without penalty.
Re: Scrambler Rules
I serously doubt that the cause of your vehicle turning during braking is due to the uneven toursional flexing of the axle. A much more likely cause is that the wheels are locking up completely and causing the tires to skid. Once your wheels are no longer turning they lose all directional control. The fact that the vehicle always turns in the same direction when the brakes are applied is probably simply due to the placement of the CG or the uneven traction (due to tire compound or weight distribution) of the tires. It is extremely important to devise a braking system that does not cause the wheels to skid if you want predictable direction and stopping distances. The wingnut system can work on a slow scrambler but not on a competitive one.mooble117 wrote:We had this problem with our scrambler a couple years ago and our Electric vehicle last year. We had the fastest scrambler by far at Nationals last spring, we were getting travel times around 2 seconds, but our stopping distance was extremely surface dependent. We didn't have sufficient time to work out a really good solution so we found a way to get the brakes to apply slowly and it helped greatly. Unfortunately what we didn't plan for is the fact that the vehicle accellerated so rapidly that the back of the egg actually cracked without hitting anything outside of the scrambler. Our normal strategy would have been to use the first run to figure out stopping distance based on the track surface and then set the second run to just hit the wall as the vehicle stopped. But since the back of the egg was already cracked we had to be extremely conservative on our second run to be absolutely sure that the egg didn't touch the wall and break the egg. In the end I think we were 10 cm short of the wall.
Interestingly enough the fact that the vehicle went so fast meant that we had to very carefully adjust it to go straight. If the vehicle had even the slightest turn it would skid and shoot off the track as soon as it left the launcher, sometimes it would even roll over from the G forces of the turn. We got all that worked out at the last minute but we weren't prepared for a launching G force induced crack in the egg.

Re: Scrambler Rules
That's probably what it is. I dont think I have to worry about making my scrambler go that fast. The stopping distance at my state last year was 3 meters [no that wasnt a typo] The event was also ran in a gym that had some sort of rubber mat over the floor making it very hard to accelerate your scrambler. I myself didnt watch the scrambler event at states but my friend did and she said the one she watched could only get 1 foot before stopping. I dont know if that was because it was a really bad team running at that time or if it was because the surface was impossible to run on. I'm going to rebuild my scrambler and try to reduce the skid as much as i can. Also, is it ok to use a plastic egg for testing? I highly doubt my school would let me test with real eggs since we have this strict no food rule. Even if i did use real eggs it would be really messy if i kept crashing into the wall.
