The absolute worst book that I have ever had the misfortune of reading was The Great Gatsby. I was forced to read it and it absolutely sucked. Its pretty much 7 chapters of going to parties with no purpose and then someone dies. I would like to go Fahrenheit 451 all over that book. If The Great Gatsby is considered great American Literature, then America has no great Literature.
If there is something that is, but shouldn't be, follow the money.

Actually, I thought it was a great book. It was my favorite one that we read in 11th grade.

Atlas Shrugged. For the life of me I cannot figure out what anyone likes about that book. I think Gatsby is overrated, but not actually bad. Ditto for Great Expectations. The key to Dickens is that he was paid by the word, so he uses a lot of them - some of his books are actually pretty good as long as you read them really fast. Some are not, though - Pickwick Papers is unreadable, IMHO.
SOninja - it's probably too late to help any more, but The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite books in middle school, along with the Tolkien books and a few others. It is also pretty sad, though.

I liked Atlas Shrugged, even though it tended to be a bit lecturing because the basic premise is quite interesting.

Yeah, I enjoyed Atlas Shrugged a lot. I mean, her philosophy is kinda outdated and I dont really agree with it, but I still found it an interesting read.

I couldn't stand it - it is soo heavily pedantic and transparent. I felt like I could predict the end within the first couple of pages, and by page 30 I wanted to strangle her - Rand, that is. I don't think I got much farther than that.

Eh, to each his own.

A lot of people liked it, but "Extremely Load and Incredibly Close" didn't do much for me. Throughout the book I thought it was good, but the ending was a huge letdown. The whole book basically built up to something that never happened....
