Re: Write it Do it
I would say that this debate has already happened, back a few pages... both are difficult. As a Writer with an insanely good Doer last year, I'd be inclined to say that writing is harder, but then again, I know she made it look easier than it actually is... In other words, I've only ever been a Writer. Most people don't switch back and forth. Also, most people are concretely better at one than the other, because they're two completely different- albeit related- skills. Therefore, it's very hard to know which one is more difficult (and really not all that important).

Re: Write it Do it
Writing is the most important part of the event. If you have a good writer, you really don't even need a specific doer at all... if the writing is done perfectly, you can give the directions to anyone on the team along with basic information about the system of directions used and if they're even reasonably competent they can build the structure perfectly from the directions. The only skill required in doing is the amount that the writer is lacking in writing.

Re: Write it Do it
However, in the context of the event, it is rarely practical to write "universal" directions. It's generally a better idea to write directly to a certain Doer, because then it's possible to come up with a syntax with your partner that is faster to write than complete directions (and yes, it is possible to develop such a syntax that fits completely within the rules and still offers speed benefits).
Don't get me wrong, I personally think writing is the harder/more important part, but I also think it's irrelevant which is more difficult/important, because both are necessary.

Re: Write it Do it
What would a writer be without the doer, and what would the the doer be with out the writer?

Re: Write it Do it
yeah exactly....each part is extremely important. Without a writer, the doer will have nothing to build and without a doer, nothing will get built and you will automatically get last placedudeincolorado wrote:What would a writer be without the doer, and what would the the doer be with out the writer?

I guess there is more riding on the writer.

Re: Write it Do it
yeah there is in my opinion, but you have to have a writer that thinks like the doer or a doer that thinks like the writer

Re: Write it Do it
As a doer myself, I would like to argue that the doer is still very important.
By the way, I'm aware that the writer is still very important, but the doer has to have speed and a good ability to follow directions. It can't be anyone. I'm definitely not saying the doer is more important than the writer, but the writing doesn't matter at all if the doer can't follow directions. The same thing applies the other way: The doing doesn't matter at all if the writer can't write well.
The old doer got 15th at regionals, so I'm thinking I can probably crack the top ten at state. WIDI has never been one of our team's best events anyway, so I think my coach will be happy with anything better than 15th.I recently tested off with the doer for my team because my coach wanted to give me a 6th event for state. I beat him 5 times in a row. The kid only ever got half way through the directions, and I finish with several minutes left. This kid has been the team's doer for the whole year and State last year. I can't believe our coach didn't try to find a replacement before.

Re: Write it Do it
i would argue that they are pretty equally important
you can't be a doer without directions
or be a writer with no one to create it
(but i do think the writer is more important because his job is harder and
requires more preparation, being a writer myself.)

Re: Write it Do it
so anyway in PA oud write-it-Do-it
was insanely challenging
we had a styrofoam cube with toothpicks rubber bands and string running through the whole thing
at all sorts of random angles.
we had about 15 toothpicks
6 rubber bands
1long string
2 coffee straws
and 30 beads
