Should we know how to calculate seismic moment and the Richter magnitude (using formulas)?

Well, what formulas are there? And do we need scientific calculators to do the calculations? This is my first year in SO, so I don't really know what I"m doing, and we're going to nationals, so its going to be much harder than state.

ugh, the illinois states test was so random. it was half rocks and minerals!
they asked us to fill in some blanks in the mohs scale, to draw the crystal formation of halite, and to write the correct order metamorphic order of slate, gneiss, schist, and something like phylite, among other random things. it even asked for the illinois state mineral!
we aced the actual dynamic planet part of it, though, so we managed to get third.

I was there too, and I got first. I was lucky though, that my book for studying also had Rocks and Minerals. We guessed on the state mineral. Afterward, me and my partner were walking around in the hall and saw a display. She started screaming: it was a display of the Illinois state mineral, that we got RIGHT! But I agree, it was random and mostly rocks and minerals. We also got lucky and got 3 out of the 4 Mohs scale things right. In my opinion, except for the rocks, it was an easy test.

at least it actually had something to be a good determination of placing, they gave div C the same test as div B at my states, and it was a really easy test, so it must have been down to tiebreakers for all the places
