Sorry for the triple post, but I have a question. So my partner and I were taking a test and we came across this question:

4. Which sequence of mRNA is produced from the transcription of DNA with the following coding strand sequence:
5' AATGGCACAGGTTCG 3'
a. 5' AAUGGCACAGGUUCG 3'
b. 5' UUACCGUGUCCAAGC 3'
c. 3' UUACCGUGUCCAAGC 5'
d. 3' CGUUCCUGUGCCAUU 5'
My partner and I thought the answer would be C, but it actually is A. Can somebody please explain why?

The answer C is if the sequence given was the template strand, which is the strand the mRNA sequence determines its nucleotide sequence from. The coding strand is complementary to the template strand. This means that the sequence given in the question needs to be converted to the template strand first, then the mRNA sequence (or all in one step, just replace T with U). For any given gene, the template strand is always used to create the mRNA strand.

Hope this clears things up!
