Team motivation

Post by Waterpigcow »

What are the carrots and/or sticks your scioly team uses to keep members of the team on task? how does your school focus about 20 teens to study/build for a period of time? our team is having trouble with a few members consistently being off task during practice, playing football etc. instead of focusing on their events. how do we change this behavior?

Well... Our team only has to focus 7 people... But, you {hopefully} answer your question, we set events to study at the meeting each week, and then expect the people to show up and study them... Although, since you can only have 15 people on a team and you mentioned about 20, you could move the goof-offs to a B team or a list of alternates, depending on what y'all have...

I think you mean to answer your question haha

Our high school sucks at this, but at the middle school, we have meetings split between a few coaches from 3-5 PM, and students can come and basically work on whatever they want for Science Olympiad.

Start a communist revolution. With communism, they will be more motivated to work(Especially builders).

We suspend our trophies from the ceiling so that the team is constantly reminded of what they need to bring home at state.

For real though, it's impossible to get a bunch of teenagers to focus for a while if they aren't in a mindset to focus. There are always going to be people that don't go to meetings or goof off when they do go. If it's so chronic that they distract other people or don't work on their events at all, then we've had to ask some people to either leave meetings or the team entirely. Our B division team had a big problem with students just showing up to goof off, and a lot of them aren't competing anymore because they just weren't ready for the responsibility.

simple answer, we don't. Our steering comittee does jack. Not even the varsity team has started studying for regionals, which mind you, is a week and a half from now.
Ok this is epic 8-)

yeah. Me and like two other people are the only people who have started somewhat ahead of time. And we are on JV, mind you. Honestly it's so frustrating with my high school. Like last year in Division B we would get started in September. This year we moved to waxhaw so we are now stuck with an SO team who an just barely make it to states.
