Besides Entropy and enthalpy, how much of thermochemistry do you think could be tested? The only thermochemistry that ever came up on tests this year were related to the definition of entropyCookiePie1 wrote:There are quite a few tests on the wiki, which are pretty good. What did the thermometer say to the graduated cylinder?

If Giancolli is a starting point, what would you recomend to study afterwards?

Re: Thermodynamics B/C
As for me, I've never seen a thermochemistry question on a test that didn't be involve some type of entropy/enthalpy/will this reaction be spontaneous question, so it is quite unlikely that there's will be a question like that on a thermo test, but there's always that one time....arv101 wrote:Besides Entropy and enthalpy, how much of thermochemistry do you think could be tested? And also how to improve the thermo device testing rules; use syringes, increase IWB value, etc.

Re: Thermodynamics B/C
The part that is blurriest (or most unclear) at the competitions is how to effectively test the devices and keep the water temperatures and all the other variables that are supposed to be constants, well, constant. If you have ever spammed tests of your thermodynamic insulating device at home, so as to get data points and get better predictions, you'll know that without the right equipment, it can be hard to get the water to the right temperature. It takes lots and lots of patience. At competitions they have the right equipment, but limited time, and lots of people. The proper way to test the devices is by starting a test of one device, recording the variables for that device, and then starting another device and recording the variables. Unfortunately, this isn't very effective, and quite a few times is not even carried out, leading for the thermodynamic device testing to be a bit unfair (its unavoidable). Some methods taken to remedy this included using syringes ( a shout out to those who had that ingenious idea ), having teams go up one at a time (as suggested in rule book), etc. These could and should be added in the rule book to help streamline the processes, as they are inexpensive, easy ways to improve accuracy and fairness. I'm not saying that do current rule book was half baked; I understand that the heads of SciOly tried to make it as fair as possible, I'm just saying on this forum, we've discussed a lot of things that, if added to the rule book, could help create a more organized and efficient way to do Thermo in the future.
